| Tuesday 11th September I guess I first heard about it walking to biology class. I had overselpt this morning, so I was in an exhausted daze at school, trying to keep my eyes open and think straight. "What if there's war?" I heard Lance say suddenly. I didn't pay much attention, just assumed it was another one of his stupid conversations. "You know, they might send us to fight!" he seemed somewhat excited at the thought, the glorious victory of an un-fought battle already ringing in his voice. His best friend shook his head, but Lance persued, "They do that, you know, send 17 and 18 year olds to fight. That would suck!" I went to class without giving it a secon thought--it was just Lance being himself after all. Not five seconds was I in the room before Evan came up to me and started spilling about how planes crashed into the World Trade Centre Towers and The Pentagon. at first, I didn't beleive him. I told him to stop being a jerk and making stuff up. "The US was attacked Bree!" he cried finally, exasperated with trying to explain it to me. I gave in; okay, that steas were attacked. Still, I was unfazed. New York is far from here. VERY far. There was no threat. We spent most of Sports MEd. class listening to the radio and discussing the events. I wondered why so much attention was being paid to something that didn't seem that out of the ordinary. Didn't bombs and massacres always happen in the United States?! it wasn't until we were informed that no flights were operating, the US/Canada border was near-closed and the death tolls started to come in .What distrubed me most was is that they don't know who or what country is responsible for the terroism. I heard they are partying in Palestine about the entire incident, and that's just sick. I don't think I can describe my rage and anger for such behaviour. You don't just celebrate because thousands of people are dead. Still, I considered the event's event on us miniscule. What happened doesn't really strike, like you can't fully absorb it all first wind. It is only after I repeat to myself numerous times, "the US was attacked, the US was attacked" that I suddenly stop and go- "Omigod, the US was attacked!" Canada however is not really at any risk. Students in the school are scared out of their minds--so much that our classes were interupted twice to assure everyone we weren't in danger. I feel bad for the number of lives taken, and my heart goes out to the familes who suffer loss because of this tragedy. It's scary how they say this is the worst attack since Pearl Harbour and comparable so. Anyway, I have to go to work soon--lets hope the mall doesn't get blown up! Bree |
