If you had asked me a few weeks ago what I thought of the attack on America I would have replied that I was shocked and angry. Now it just seems like some distant dream.
I found out about the attack on Wednesday 12th September. When Mum woke me up the first thing she said to me was- "There were terroist attacks, you better talk to Dalia today!" I basically jumped out of bed startled awake. "What do you mean, talk to Dalia?" Dalia is a friend of mine who lives in Mississippi, USA. That's when Mum told me the attacks were in New York and not Mississippi. All of a sudden I felt a lot calmer but as soon as I switched on the TV I found myself starting to panic. The pictures were horrific, the buildings were smashed into thousands of pieces, smoke poured from the World Trade Centre but even worse than the graphics was the words the reporters seemed to repeat over and over....terroist attack.
Wednesday the 12th seemed like the slowest day ever. Every news channel for days covered the event, they talked in number of casualites and everyone was angry.
My American friends had a lot of different ideas about who commited the crime. Matt in Texas beleived right from the beginning it was Osama Bin Laden. Tammy in Ohio beleived it was the Palestinians; as she is an Israeli immigrant.
George .W. Bush spoke with passion in the following days and weeks after the attack. He reminded Americans that they were freedom fighters and no one would steal their freedom. CNN conducted polls that stated that most Americans beleived America should go to war.
And so that is what American has done.
Emails filled me inbox...some petitions for worldwide peace, others containing very hateful pictures of Bin Laden even before the USA had decided he was their main suspect. The petitions were great to recieve and I felt an overcoming sense of hope as people joined together worldwide through the internet. Webmasters displayed ribbons and banners on their sites honouring the heros and victims and encouraging others to do the same.
My views of war and death have changed since the attack on America. I use to strongly beleive that the death penalty was wrong. After the Oaklahoma bombing I felt Tim Mc Veigh should not have been killed, as by killing someone else for killing others seems to be just as an evil act. After the attack on American I feel differently. This was not just an act of terroism on innocent people, but worldwide freedom, race and peace.
I am amazed at the amount of strengh and courage the American people have to go on with their lives and the passion they have for their country...God Bless America......
