The Bardock Special - Sub VS Dub

The Last Lonely Fighter's Battle: Freezer VS Z Fighter Kakalotto's Father VS Bardock: The Father of Goku

Please note that I used the uncut version of Bardock: The Father of Goku in this comparison. I'm assuming that in the cut version, some blood is removed and Goku's genitals are covered up, probably with a diaper.

Planet Vegeta: Kakalotto is Born

Dub: The screen shows planet Vegeta as a baby cries in the background. The narrator explains that the child's parents have left him, and he is destined to fight like all Saiyan babies.

Sub: The screen shows planet Vegeta as a baby cries in the background. The narrator says that a boy has been born on planet Vegeta.

Dub: The baby is in a glass dome. Two doctors watch over him, a humanoid one and a reptillian one. The humanoid one is Planthor, and the reptillian one is Melakka. Planthor feels that the baby will grow up to be great. Melakka says that that's a bold prediction for the son of a low class warrior, Bardock. Planthor says that the baby's cry is the cry of a great warrior. He tells Melakka to remember the name Kakarot.

Sub: The baby is in a glass dome. Two doctors watch over him, a humanoid one and a reptillian one. The humanoid one explains that the baby is Kakalotto, Bardock's son. The reptillian one says that he is the son of a low class warrior, with no potential abilities. The best he will ever do is being sent away to frontier planets.

Planet Kanassa: The Saiya-jin Attack

Dub: Just before the Oozaru attack the city, a Kanass Commander and a soldier named Demetrius discuss a vision the Kanass had. In the vision, the city was attacked on the night of a full moon. The Kanasses prepare for the attack. (Because the Kanassa-jin are psychic, it is possible that they saw the attack coming. But since they horribly lose to the Saiya-jin, we'll never know.)

Sub: Aside from the music, there is no sound.

Dub: The Kanass Commander tells his soldiers that they have to fight to the death as the Saiya-jins brutally attack them.

Sub: The Kanassa-jin do not talk, they only scream and attack.

Planet Kanassa: Bardock is Cursed

Dub: Before the animation closes in on Bardock's crew, Tora, a male Saiyan with brownish hair, teases Fasha, a female Saiyan, about not being able to remember what she does in ape form. Fasha retorts with "It's elephants that aren't supposed to forget, not apes." Borgos, a bald Saiyan with darker skin, agrees with Fasha. He feels becoming an ape is like waking up from a dream; you kind of remember, but it all slips away.

Sub: Bardock's crew doesn't speak before the animation closes in on them.

Dub: Slugesh, a fat male Saiyan with black hair, comments that he can't remember much either, but he sure can remember the "crusty little devil" that gave him a gash on his cheek. Fasha adds that Bardock can remember every second of his ape form battles. Tora says that Bardock may remember every second of his battles, but he can't remember anything of his personal life. Tora asks Bardock when his son was born. Bardock can't remember, but he says it was a long time ago. Fasha gets angry, saying it was only a day ago. She tells Bardock to see his son, but he feels children are of no use. They are only sent away.

Sub: Panboukin, a fat male Saiya-jin with black hair, rubs a gash on his cheek he got from the battle. He mutters "Damn it!" as Toma, a male Saiya-jin with brownish hair, ridicules him for dropping his guard. Toma thinks that Kanassa's destruction was in celebration of the birth of Bardock's son. Bardock denies it. Celipia, a female Saiya-jin, tells Bardock he should go see his son. Bardock asks why he should bother seeing a low class with no promise at all.

Dub: Shugesh wonders why Frieza wanted this planet. Bardock says he heard rumors of the planet having a special energy. Tora says he heard you develop psychic powers if you live here. The Saiyans begin mocking Frieza, calling him a "paranoid freak."

Sub: Panboukin tells everyone to thank Freezer for giving them all this work. Bardock asks why Freezer would want this planet at all. Toma says Freezer has been thinking of taking the planet for a long time due to the rumor that its energy gives you psychic abilities.

Dub: A surviving Kanass rises. It yells at the Saiyans for killing off his people, saying they should read minds so they could hear the thoughts of his comrades as they were killed. Bardock gasps in surprise.

Sub: A surviving Kanassa-jin, Tooro, rises. Bardock gasps in surprise.

Dub: The Kanass strikes Bardock in the back of the neck, and tells him that he has transmuted Bardock's destructive force into a more tolerable energy. (Huh? I don't get it, but my friend thinks it means he lowered Bardock's fighting power, which he didn't.) He tells Bardock they all will die. The Kanass explains that Bardock can now see the future. Frieza, the one who wants the power, will never have it, but Bardock can have it as a gift so he can see his people die, just like the Kanass had to. Bardock angrily blasts the Kanass.

Sub: Tooro strikes Bardock in the back of the neck, and tells him Bardock is cursed with the power to see the future. Tooro tells Bardock that like his people, only destruction lies in wait for the Saiya-jins. Bardock angrily blasts Tooro.

Dub: Shugesh jokes about how the Kanass became an instant barbeque, then comments on the Kanass' "freaky" appearance. He is cut off when Bardock collapses, and yells "Yo!" to get Bardock back up.

Sub: Panboukin laughs at Tooro, claiming that the Saiya-jins are invincible and have nothing to fear. He is cut off when Bardock collapses.

Dub: The Saiya-jin watch as Bardock lies on the ground.

Sub: The Saiya-jin yell at Bardock to get up. (Wow, FUNi's actually removing dialogue!)

Planet Vegeta: Vegeta's Training

Dub: As Vegeta fights off Saibamen, two attendants watch. One is amazed at Vegeta's skills, yelling "Holy rings of Korbeesha, did you see that?" The other isn't as shocked, having seen him train before.

Sub: As Vegeta fights off Saibaimen, an attendant watches. He is amazed at how Vegeta avoids the attacks.

Dub: Vegeta finishes off the Saibamen. The attendants are amazed at Vegeta's strength. They wonder what he will be like when he grows up. Nappa says that no one knows, but he advises the attendants to stay on Vegeta's good side. An attendant agrees, saying "Shoot yeah!" He quickly opens the door to the training room.

Sub: The attendant is amazed at Vegeta's strength. Nappa comments that Vegeta wasn't even trying. The attendant wonders what Vegeta will be like when he grows up. Vegeta tells the attendant to open the door, and the attendant obliges.

Dub: Nappa compliments Vegeta on his fighting, but Vegeta is only angered by his flattery. Vegeta voices his boredom at the drills on planet Vegeta. He tells Nappa the day will come soon when they don't have to listen to Frieza. Nappa is glad at that thought. (Wow, Saiyans really hate Frieza. I wonder why they didn't help Bardock if they hate that "paranoid freak" so much?...)

Sub: Nappa compliments Vegeta on his fighting, but Vegeta is only angered by his flattery. Vegeta claims that staying on this planet won't increase his strength. He decides to ask Freezer to let him conquer a planet. Nappa is unsure, but changes his opinion when Vegeta snaps at him.

Dub: Frieza is resting in his chamber with Zarbon and Dodoria. Zarbon tells Frieza that planet Kanassa has been occupied as of last night. Dodoria exclaims that the planet has been unconquered for months, and they were going to do it themselves. Zarbon says that a band of Saiyans took it. Dodoria says that their elite teams are comparable to Frieza's. Zarbon corrects him, it was a low-level band. Dodoria retorts that no low-levels could take Kanassa; the Saiyans are only standouts. Zarbon agrees, a small group on a full moon can be hard to beat. Dodoria teases Zarbon, saying that he's scared of the Saiyans. Zarbon says he isn't, he just feels they need to keep an eye on the Saiyans. He seems to know who Bardock is, claiming that if Bardock's crew, Vegeta, and few other great warriors teamed up on a full moon, they could be in trouble. Frieza laughs, saying that only a fool would welcome that scenario.

Sub: Freezer is resting in his chamber with Zarbon and Dodoria. Zarbon tells Freezer that planet Kanassa has been conquered, a month earlier than expected. Dodoria asks who conquered it, and Zarbon says that it was some nameless low level team. Zarbon and Dodoria agree that the Saiya-jin are remarkable. Dodoria comments that the Saiya-jin prince, Vegeta, has an amazing battle power, and Freezer has taken an interest in him. Zarbon disagrees, saying that alone, most Saiya-jin are worthless. They are only powerful in groups. Dodoria asks Zarbon if he is afraid of them. Zarbon isn't afraid, but feels if the Saiya-jin are left alone, it could mean trouble later. Another Saiya-jin like Vegeta could appear, or the Saiya-jin could team up against Freezer. Freezer says that the Saiya-jin could become an eyesore, and Zarbon agrees. (Wow, quite a lot of talk between those three in both versions.)

Dub: Vegeta enters the room. Zarbon and Dodoria block him off, as Frieza didn't send for him. Vegeta rudely tells them that he's bored and planet Vegeta is lame. He needs an assignment. Zarbon tells Vegeta that he needs a lesson in etiquette. Frieza angrily yells at Zarbon to give Vegeta an assignment. Frieza explains to Zarbon that Vegeta is harmless, he just can't control his passion. Vegeta is given the current hardest assignment, and told to come back alive. Vegeta thanks Frieza, but Frieza tells him not to thank him; he earns his keep already. Frieza tells Vegeta to mind his manners though.

Sub: Vegeta enters the room. Zarbon and Dodoria block him off, saying that he doesn't belong here. Vegeta says that he's come to ask for a better assignment. Zarbon tells him there's no need for that, but Freezer cuts him off, telling Vegeta to do a good job. Vegeta thanks Freezer, but he tells Vegeta not to thank him.

Planet Vegeta: Bardock's Mysterious Visions

Dub: Bardock is in a healing tank, being monitored by Melakka and Planthor. Melakka comments that if Bardock keeps getting beat up, he'll be stronger than King Vegeta. Planthor agrees; Bardock comes back from every mission half-dead. Melakka adds that Bardock is crazy; no one would go to Kanassa with only a few men. Planthor cuts Melakka off, saying Bardock has an unusual condition and needs to rest.

Sub: Bardock is in a healing tank, being monitored by the two doctors. The humanoid is suprised at how Bardock is able to recover in only a few days. The reptile agrees, commenting that although Bardock is only a low class warrior, he manages to almost get killed on every mission. The humanoid estimates Bardock's power at close to 10 000.

Dub: Tora enters, asking Bardock's condition. Melakka tells Tora that physically, Bardock's ready. Mentally, however, they aren't sure. There is a slight change in his brainwave patterns. Shugesh tells Tora that they should handle the next mission on their own. Tora agrees, and says they should be fine on Meet. He bids farewell to his "old friend." (^_^)

Sub: Toma enters, asking Bardock's condition. The reptillian doctor explains that physically, Bardock is perfect. However, the computer is picking up an odd brainwave pattern. Panboukin shrugs it off, saying that they'll just leave Bardock behind this time. Toma agrees. The humanoid doctor asks where they are going, and Toma says the planet Meet.

Dub: Bardock's crew leaves. Kakarot begins to cry, and Bardock stirs. The computer starts to go crazy. Melakka starts panicking. Bardock has a vision of a planet exploding. He is unsure if it was Vegeta, but assures himself it wasn't. He realizes his son saw it too. Bardock sees a space pod fly through space, and realizes it was his son. Bardock sees Grandpa Gohan with young Goku, and feels Goku's loneliness. He sees a vision of Tora bloody, and doesn't understand. He continues to see visions of young Goku, one of him with Bulma. He wonders what his son has to do with her. He sees another image of Goku and Bulma on a motorcycle, and begins to wonder why he's seeing this. He sees young Goku training, then Goku as a young adult fighting Piccolo. He realizes that his son has become a warrior, but has become different from other Saiyans. He begins to panic, wondering what happened to his son and why he is seeing this.

Sub: Bardock's crew leaves. Kakarotto begins to cry, and Bardock stirs. The computer starts to go crazy. The reptillian doctor thinks Bardock is regaining consiousness. Bardock begins to have a vision, first of a planet exploding, then of a space pod, then of young Gokou with Grandpa Gohan, then of a bloodied Toma, then of Gokou with Bulma, then of Gokou and Bulma on a motorcycle, then of Gokou training, and lastly, of Gokou as a young adult fighting Piccolo. As Bardock sees the visions, he hears Tooro's voice tell him that he is cursed with the power to see the destruction of his own people.

Dub: The doctors are panicking, thinking that something serious is happening to Bardock. They quickly open the tank. Planthor tells Bardock he gave them a scare, and it's a good thing he's okay. He asks Bardock what happened, but Bardock says he isn't sure. Bardock claims he was having a nightmare, but he wasn't quite asleep.

Sub: The tank opens. The humanoid doctor asks Bardock if he's all right. Bardock says he's a little dizzy, but otherwise okay.

Dub: Bardock gets dressed. Planthor tells Bardock that it's wise to take it easy. Bardock retorts that he isn't wise. Planthor disagrees, saying that if Bardock wasn't wise, he wouldn't be able to take on so many assignments and still be alive. Bardock says he only knows how to fight; it doesn't take brains to be a great fighter. He remembers hearing Tora, and asks where he is. Planthor tells Bardock his team was ordered to go to planet Meet by Frieza himself. Bardock is shocked, but is glad his crew is finally getting the recognition they deserve. He is angry that "those bums" would leave without him, though. He runs off. Planthor yells after Bardock that he needs to rest, but Bardock is too far off.

Sub: Bardock gets dressed. He tells the humanoid doctor he was having strange dreams. He wonders to himself what they were about. The humanoid doctor asks Bardock if he's sure he's all right. Bardock tells the doctor he isn't like him. He asks where Toma and the others are. He is told by the humanoid that they were ordered to the planet Meet. Bardock is angry at how they left him out, but realizes that Meet is pretty close. He runs off. The humanoid calls after him, but Bardock is too far off.

Dub: Bardock runs down a hallway, but is stopped by Kakarot's crying. He spots his son through a window into the nursery. Bardock is relieved that Kakarot is real this time. He jokes about Kakarot's powerful lungs, and is about to leave when he is stopped by the voice of the Kanass who struck him, explaining that he now has the psychic power he desired. Bardock sees a planet explode, and feels that Kakarot can also see the visions. He checks Kakarot's power level, and realizes it is only average. Sure that Kakarot was special, Bardock angrily runs off.

Sub: Bardock runs down a hallway, but is stopped by Kakalotto's crying. He spots his son through a window into the nursery. He hears Tooro's voice again, telling him he is cursed to see his own terrible future. He sees a vision of a planet exploding. He focuses on his son, and checks Kakalotto's power level. With a power level of only two, Bardock angrily runs off.

Planet Meet: The Ambush

Dub: Borgos charges at a warrior, but is instantly killed. Tora curses, reaching for his cracked scouter. A boot smashes it. Tora asks why the warriors are doing this. One of the warriors is revealed to be Dodoria, who lifts Tora up by his armour. Dodoria mocks Tora for being so weak, and Tora continues to ask why they have done this. He tells Dodoria the team has always served Frieza. Dodoria tells Tora that Frieza is very impressed with them. Too impressed, and he wants them dead for being much too strong. The purple creature tells Tora he should consider it a promotion. Tora is angered, as everything his crew did was for Frieza. Dodoria tells them it's not what they've done, it's what they might've done in the future. Tora tells Dodoria no one's safe from Frieza, not even Dodoria. Dodoria punches Tora into the distance.

Sub: Totepo charges at a warrior, but is instantly killed. Toma curses, reaching for his cracked scouter. A boot smashes it. Toma asks why the warriors are doing this. One of the warriors is revealed to be Dodoria, who lifts Toma up by his armour. Dodoria tells Toma he's as tough as he expected, but his crew will toy with him a little longer. Toma continues to ask why they have done this. Dodoria responds that Freezer ordered it, as the Saiya-jin were becoming an eyesore. The purple creature asks if Toma did anything to upset Freezer. Toma says they have always obeyed Freezer. Dodoria says this is what happens if you fall out of favour, before punching Toma into the distance.

Dub: Bardock surveys the damage to the planet. He jokes that they plowed through the planet. He's glad he taught them something about fighting. Bardock's scouter beeps, and he notices they're still here. He figures the "lousy bums" are celebrating, and flies off to find them. He instead finds their bodies.

He asks Tora if the "Meatheads" did this to them. Tora replies that Bardock should know better than that. Bardock asks what happened. Tora tells Bardock that they were ambushed by Dodoria and his men. It was a setup by Frieza, who wants them dead. Bardock asks wht Frieza would do such a thing, when they took on jobs even elites wouldn't try. Tora says that they're becoming the best, and Frieza was scared. Tora tells Bardock that Frieza's especially scared of Bardock, who was getting much too strong. His dying words are "Good luck, old friend. I'm sorry that I can't..." (Awww! I especially liked that. ^_^ I just wish Tora had told Bardock to stand up to Frieza like he did in the original, instead of just repeating that Frieza was scared of them. :( )

Sub: Bardock hears Toma call out to him, and rushes over to his barely living friend. He kneels by Toma, lifting his head up. Toma tells Bardock he was a fool who could've stayed behind. Bardock asks if the Meet-jin did this. Toma says that they easily defeated them. Bardock asks who could've done this. Toma says that Freezer betrayed them. Freezer's been using the Saiya-jin all along, and plans to kill them all. His dying words are "Go back to planet Vegeta. And gather our comrades to kill Freezer. Show him the strength of the Saiya-jin people."

Dub: Bardock's last words to Tora are "Goodbye, Tora. You were my best friend." (Another aww! I guess FUNi's hoping to win us Bardock fans over with quotes like these. ;) ) Bardock takes a white cloth off of Tora's arm. As he wipes the blood off of Tora's face, he comments that this is their only reward for their hard work. As he looks around at his friends, the cloth slowly turns red with blood. He continues talking to himself, angry at what Frieza has done after all their work. He calls out to Borgos and Fasha. He tells Shugesh he'll get them for what they've done, or die trying. His final words to his comrades are "Frieza's taken our loyalty and paid us back in our own blood!" The cloth is now totally red. Bardock's scouter beeps, and he turns around to see Dodoria's men. Bardock tells the warriors that he knew there was a foul smell in the air. The red creature tells Bardock he cracks him up, and they had some good laughs with his crew. He should've been there. Bardock ties the cloth around his forehead, agreeing with the red creature. He should've been there. A creature asks if it would've made a difference. Bardock responds by charging at the warriors.

Sub: Bardock takes a white cloth off of Toma's arm. He wipes the blood off of Toma's face with it. The music takes over the scene as Bardock looks around at his dead crew. The other men fire at Bardock, causing a cloud of smoke. The red creature asks where Bardock went, but the yellow creature tells him Bardock can't hide forever. Bardock appears, choking the yellow creature. The red creature's scouter beeps, and he fires into a smoke cloud. The yellow creature screams, plummeting to the ground. Bardock appears, grinning. The green creature tells the red creature to watch out, but the red creature dismisses it. He's only a low level, they're elites. Bardock and the two creatures fly towards each other. Bardock has a vision of Goku using Kaioken. Bardock is kicked in the face as he returns to reality. The green creature grabs him, and Bardock has a vision of Goku fighting Vegeta. Vegeta tells Goku he's ok for a low level. The red creature is punching Bardock, and prepares a powerful one. Bardock flips, sending the punch all the way through the green creature. Bardock moves away, blasting the two warriors. Bardock calls out "That was from my crew to you!" He lands, joking that Frieza must be worried about the Saiya-jin if those are his elites. His scouter beeps, and he turns around to see Dodoria.

Dodoria fires a mouth blast at Bardock, knocking him and his team's bodies away. Dodoria jokes that his attack "blew Bardock away." A voice on his scouter informs him that Frieza wants him to return to the ship before it reaches Vegeta. Dodoria figures that Frieza is "planning something delicious."

Sub: Bardock asks Dodoria why he's done such a thing. Dodoria fires a mouth blast at Bardock, knocking him and his team's bodies away. Dodoria comments that it was too brief; he wanted Bardock to entertain him longer. Zarbon contacts Dodoria via his scouter, telling Dodoria he must return. Freezer is headed for planet Vegeta.

Dub: Bardock pulls himself out from a pile of his team's bodies, still alive. He swears that he will get Dodoria someday, for his team. He says "You weren't low level soldiers. You were stronger than most of their elites. We'll meet again, my friends. Sooner or later, we'll meet again." (^_^ FUNi definitely knows how to get us Bardock fans.)

Sub: Bardock pulls himself out from a pile of his team's bodies, still alive. He curses, realizing that Freezer is really after the Saiya-jins.

Planet Vegeta: Freezer Approaches

Dub: Many Saiyan space pods are lined up, ready to be sent into space. A voice says that they must send Kakarot to co-ordinates FX-50. Frieza tells Dodoria this will teach him to be more thorough with his work. Dodoria asks Frieza if he can go kill Bardock. Frieza tells Dodoria instead of going for the bee, he's going for the hive. Zarbon decides Frieza means to extinguish the whole lot of them. Frieza says Zarbon is right; if you want to get rid of the weed, you have to go for the root.

Sub: Dodoria bows to Freezer, announcing his return. Zarbon tells Dodoria he failed; he allowed one of the Saiya-jin to escape. Dodoria tells Zarbon he made certain that they were all dead. The second attendant also mentions that Bardock just missed his son, and if he had known that Bardock was coming, he would've delayed his departure. Bardock thinks to himself that he wasn't hallucinating. He has a vision of Earth, and realizes that it is the planet his son was sent to. The second attendant asks if Bardock would like to be escorted to the recovery chambers. Bardock thinks to himself that the other part of the vision must be true as well. He has the vision of a planet exploding again, and realizes Frieza is planning to destroy Vegeta. Bardock runs off, and the second attendant calls after him. The first attendant directs the other attendant's attention to Bardock's pod, which is heavily stained with blood. The first attendant comments that Bardock must've really been messed up this time.

He realizes his vision of Kakalotto leaving for Earth was true, which means every vision reflects the future. He has the vision of the planet exploding again, and realizes Freezer is planning to destroy Vegeta. Bardock runs off, and the second attendant calls after him. The first attendant directs the other attendant's attention to Bardock's pod, which is heavily stained with blood. The first attendant comments that Bardock is far from all right.

Dub: Bardock slowly moves through a hallway, using the wall to support himself. He calls Frieza a monster, fully realizing that Frieza will blow up the planet. Bardock falls down a small flight of stairs. He remains on the ground, realizing he has to warn the others and stop Frieza somehow. Bardock passes out, and has visions of Goku on Earth again. The Kanass tells Bardock that Frieza, who seeks this power, will never have it, but Bardock has it as a gift. He can now see the horror of his end, just like the Kanass' people had to. Bardock asks where he is, and the Kanass replies that he is in the future, what he killed the Kanasses for. His son is a powerful warrior, like his father was. At this time, Bardock is long dead, blown up with his planet. Bardock becomes angered, but the Kanass tells Bardock to take heart. A savior has been born, one with the power to save the innocent from people like Frieza...and Bardock. An image of Frieza appears, and Bardock wakes up, standing. He screams "NO!" and continues pulling himself along the wall. He tells himself that he isn't crazy, he can see the future. He must warn the others, and try to change his future.

Final Thoughts on the Dub

What I Liked:

  • Bardock and Tora refered to each other as friends
  • Bardock recognized his whole crew, and not just Tora
  • After defeating the assassins, Bardock shouted "That was from my crew to you!"
  • Bardock was more emotional in his last words to Kakalotto

    What I Didn't Like:

  • Removal of good music, especially Bardock's death theme and Solid State Scouter
  • Crew name changes
  • Added slang and jokes
  • Dialogue when there should be silence
  • The Saiyans appear to hate Frieza (Then why didn't they help Bardock?)
  • Tora didn't tell Bardock to kill Frieza before he died
  • Bardock spoke to Goku during his vision (As much as I really want Bardock and Gokou to meet, it took away from the emotion)
  • Bardock's last speech to Frieza
  • Although I liked most of Bardock's new emotional side, sometimes he was a little too emotional
  • Frieza didn't make firework references! NOOO!
  • Removal of Vegeta's talk with Nappa

First off, I'm glad American audiences are finally able to see the glory that is Bardock. ^_^ But it could've been done so much better. I think they made Bardock more emotional to make him seem like more of a good guy, and although Bardock was a little too emotional sometimes, most of it was good. ^_^ A lot of the emotion was ruined by the dub music and added dialogue. Good for FUNi, but not good enough. I'd give it a 6/10.
