Mana has often talked about growing up with a music teacher for a father and being 'subjected' to classical music since birth, but he was never fond of it at the time. His tastes lay rather in heavy metal and punk and his first venture to the music industry was with a high school band called Ves.tearge. He then went to join a punk band in Osaka called Girl’e, under the name of Serina, and released one demo tape with two songs while with them. Moving to Tokyo he joined Matenrow as a bassist and soon after met Közi and discussed his own musical visions with him which had now turned back to his classical roots.
Malice Mizer - In Malice Mizer Mana had role of leader as well as main composer and set the style of the twin guitars characteristic of their sound. He always had a taste for the macabre as well as the elegant, and his compositions during that period vary greatly as opposed to Kozi’s which are often more predictable of his style. As a leader he managed to keep the band together, active and creative through various difficulties and lineup changes that any other band would not have endured. To this day Mana is reluctant to call Malice Mizer finished as though it is a concept inside which his whole world takes place.
Midi:Nette - It is believed that Malice Mizer’s record company -Midi:Nette- is owned by Mana and has existed since 1992, although some changes must have occurred to the label when MM returned to it exclusively in 1999, as it appears as Midi:Nette M+M from then onwards. When Malice Mizer ceased activities in 2001 the label went on to host only Mana’s solo work in Moi dix Mois, along with Mana’s newly produced band Schwarz Stein (now disbanded). It is currently looking to expand further by seeking new musicians, as well as by having titles pressed in Europe and finally officially opening its door to the international market.
Moi-même-Moitié - Mana’s heavy emphasis on visuals lead him to open his own fashion label in 1999 called
-Moi-même-Moitié-. The brand is responsible for the terms Elegant Gothic Lolita (EGL) and Elegant Gothic Aristocrat (EGA) which were a blending of the existing Lolita and Gothic fashions. This created a magnificent result which would spring a whole new fashion craze and lifestyle and be copied repeatedly around the world. Mana modeling his own clothes has been one of the main features in every issue of the Gothic Lolita Bible (GLB) since the magazine first appeared, and all members of Moi dix Mois are dressed exclusively by the brand. Moi-même-Moitié, along with Midi:Nette, -opened its door- to the world outside Japan in 2004 after many years of expectation by westerners.
Mana as a person has earned many negative titles for himself due to his alleged ego and snobbish attitude, partly attributed to the fact that he refuses to speak in public and that so many people seem to have had 'creative differences' with him. In reality though he seems to have been more than happy to let other members contribute to the band in different ways and has spoken with a feeling of sadness for departed blood relatives. He does however seem to have strict standards on what he expects from his vocalists and co-workers and is a perfectionist to the core. He also has a vision of his ideal artistic world and doesn’t seem to be stopping until he achieves it.
Mana currently has his own personal website -Monologue Theater- which was opened in 2002, and his personal
-Mon Amour- fanclub established soon after. In 2004 Mon Amour became an -international fanclub- following the European pressings of Moi dix Mois releases and Mana's first public appearance overseas at the Japan Expo in Paris. He is careful to point out that Moi dix Mois is his solo project and not a new band and has left the doors open for what lies in the future. He has said that he's looking for more bands to produce under Midi:Nette and all in all is set on finally expanding abroad after close to 15 years in the Japanese music business. Let’s hope he gets all the recognition he deserves.
