    Plane-balloon test flight [ 2nd Half 2000 ]

Let's decide to organise The Plane-Balloon test flight for our crew/team.

The idea is to invite all interested to enter this team/individual event

at their own risks, liability, responsibilities and expenses.

The Plane-balloon test flight will begin at a given time and place when and where the participants will be building their PAPER aircraft. These must be able to carry a weight of an egg [ grade A ] when launched off from a height equivalent to the lower balcony of the Imperial College Queen's Tower.

These must also be able to SAFELY land the balloon. The balloon surface must first touch and continuously in contact with the ground upon the craft landing

The balloon type is the commercially available type, blown with air to expand from the initial size of 150mm by 70mm to the flight size of 300mm[major axis]

The test flight would be recorded for flight time, the horizontal distance from the starting line to that of stationary landed craft nose, the direction [ magnetic compass ] in degree bearings from the magnetic north, the condition of the balloon and of the weight representing the egg.

More test flights are planned for every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 8pm in Wisma Pengakap, Penang. Similar events are being planned.

Open meeting=Every 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Wisma Pengakap, Penang. Please Register here reply email

Your advice and suggestion would be appreciated. RSVP. YiS,Tee

    ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING [ 2000 ]

  7. Reflection and Result of Past Events
  8. Introduction

The Penang Free School BP Guild is founded in 1968. Among the members then are Datuk Aziz, Mr Khoo-Yeoh Gan Hong and Mr Peter Oon. One of the projects by the PFS BP Guild was the building of the Scout Den in the school. This serves as the home base for the Scouting Movement troops of the 1st Georgetown South, the 7th Georgetown South, the 8th Georgetown South [ Sea Scout ], the Rover Crew and the Ranger Company.

Another project by the PFS BP Guild is the introduction of the Soap Box Derby, now known as the Scout Car Grand Prix, to the Penang State Scouting Movement in 1969. The event has been noted for the very high standard of workmanship and great ingenuity by the scouts designing, constructing and innovating the Scout Cars from used bicycle spare parts and recycled materials. Mr Peter Oon of the PFS BP Guild, who has participated in the classic event of the Soap Box Derby in London during his days as law student, organised the first Soap Box Derby for the Penang State Scouting Movement. The second derby was held in the City Stadium in 1970.

The main idea of the Scout Car Rally is to let our youth have a means to express their competitive and team spirit in a fun-filled way and also to encourage skills and creativity in the design, construction and innovation of the propulsion and steering mechanisms of a human-powered vehicle from used bicycle spare parts and recycled materials. In United Kingdom, the Soap Box Derby is an annual affair. In United States, it is a Carnival Time with Soap Box cars and families spending a whole day participating and watching the thilling races. It is very common for these human powered vehicle to have nine gear changes, showing considerable driving skills by the young riders and practical technical skills by the young mechanics.

The third Scout Car Grand Prix organised by the PFS Rover Crew was held in 1972 at the Gurney Drive with 31 Scout groups and 14 Guide and Ranger companies racing eleven Scout Cars. This provides a means to let our youth to experience the management of a scouting event. This event has since then been taken on by the PFS Rover Crew in the seventies and eighties with six challenge trophies donated by the PFS BP Guild members, supporters of the Scouting Movement. In the nineties, the PFS Rover Crew and the PFS Combined Scout Council have jointly organised the event.

The most recent Scout Car Grand Prix was held on 14th May 2000 at the Gurney Drive, Penang. The daily newspaper The Star reported this event on Monday 15th May 2000 with a photograph. Many PFS BP Guild members came with their families and friends to support the event. The young scout fellowship fielded two teams in the open race relay !

That Sunday, being the Mother's Day, several mothers of the present scouts and guides sportingly rode a thrilling race in the Scout Cars round the circuit. Many parents, brothers and sisters of the scouts and guides watched the exciting races. Some parents recorded these races and their families enjoying the event by snaping photographs with their cameras and/or with their video-tape camcorders. This has allowed greater involvement from the public to enjoy scouting through this human powered vehicle rally. This is always a good time for the BP Guild to strengthen the scouting fellowship with all present.

The elected committee of the PFS BP Guild comprises of the Chairman Mr Andrew LIM, the deputy Chairman Mr LEE Hock Siew, the Honorary Secretary Ir CHEAH It Tee, the Assistant Honorary Secretary Mr Yuslee Yusof, the Honorary Treasurer Mr David WONG Eng Boo, the Assistant Honorary Treasurer Mr SEE Ewe Lin, and the Committee Members Mr GOH Cheng Teik, Mr Nevada LIEW and Mr CHONG Khee Choy.

More details about the PFS BP Guild are given in the homepage on the world-wide-web internet [ URL http:\\www.oocities.org\icheah ]

The PFS BP Guild has promoted Scouting Movement, particularly in the alma mater and generally in society, as well as, always be prepared to serve in building a future with continuous improvement in the social, technological, economics and political aspects in accordance to the Policy, Organisation and Rules of the Scouting Movement. Let us continue to strive for a common cause in this International Year of Peace and onwards.
