Report on Events

The fund-raising take-out Fish Fry lunch was held on Friday, October 25, 2002.  Thanks to all those who supported the effort.

Plans have been finalized for our Annual Dinner Dance -  the highlight event of our fundraising activities

 

Place:         Nakisaki International Restaurant in Hempstead, Long Island

Date:          Saturday, December 7, 2002

Time:          9:00 PM to 3:00 AM

Music/DJ:   Soul Tone Disco

Tickets:       $50.00 per person includes buffet dinner compliments of Nakisaki

Other:         Cash Bar - Prizes  - Bachelor Auction

Irwine Clare, Managing Director of Caribbean Immigrant Services & founder of Team Jamaica Bickle

Andrew Morris, President of Sam's Caribbean Marketing Co.

 

We are also having a raffle and the grand prize has been graciously donated by Air Jamaica - a trip for 2 to Jamaica.  Tickets are 3 for $5.00.

 

The Bachelor Auction is new this year, and promises to be lots of good fun. Come and check this out.

News about ICHS

 

-          At present, students participate in over 48 Activities offered during the Activities period on Tuesdays.  African Drumming and Photography have recently been added.

 

-          Cheerleading tryouts were held for the Inter-school cheerleading competition, which is scheduled for February 2003.  Forty (40) of the over one hundred students that were interested were selected for the cheerleading team.

 

-          ICHS will be participating in the Inter-Secondary School Sports Association (ISSA) Swim Meet, which will be held on November 29, 2002.

 

-          There will be a Music/Dance/Drama extravaganza in the patio on Sunday December 8, 2002.  During the following week  (December 10, 11, 12), displays will be set up for visitors to come in and view.

 

 

 

The Principal Speaks

 

Question: How have things changed at school since the 1970’s when she first got there?

 

Sister Mary Catherine responds:

 

Population        

            Dramatic increase in numbers.  We now have 1430+ students.

 

Plant                

                        Chapel, staff room, library, audiovisual room. Art room, labs and Home Economics room added in the 1980’s.  In the 1990’s, a new sixth form block and the conversion of the Commercial Building into a performing Arts Centre.  Four (4) Computer rooms have been created.

 

Teachers          

                        More male teachers

 

Courses           

                        Added Law, Sociology, Economics, Technical Drawing

 

Sisters 

                        Fewer nuns (down to 2)

 

Cultural (Music) 

                        A steel band, a concert band, and an orchestra

 

Sports              

                        Track & Field – a more serious programme

            Tennis – now taught throughout the day

            Hockey and Basketball – additional sports that we now compete in

 

Houses            

                        Davidica and Rose of Lima added

 

 

 

Alumnae in the News

 

Chantal Ononaiwu is to receive the Musgrave Youth Award for her work in the field of law in the Musgrave Awards.  (Sunday Gleaner, September 29, 2002)  The awards ceremony was scheduled for Wednesday October 9, 2002, but has been postponed until December 4, 2002. 

 

Thalia (Chang) Lyn, Chief Executive Officer of Island Grill, was featured on the opening of a store in Manor Park.   (Observer, Wednesday, October 2, 2002)

 

Lisa A. Lambie has been appointed Vice president of Corporate Finance at the National Commercial Bank (NCB). (Sunday Gleaner, October 6, 2002, Observer, Sunday, October 6, 2002)

 

Kimberly Chin Yee is attending the Universite de En Provence in France, having successfully completed the French equivalent of A’level exams. (Gleaner Youthlink Magazine, Tuesday, October 8, 2002)

 

A special mass was held at Stella Maris, where three couples celebrating 25 years of marriage were recognised.  Karen (Lee) Chuck and Maureen (Lowe) Lee were featured. (Gleaner Outlook, Sunday, October 13, 2002)

 

Shahine (Fakhourie) Robinson retained her seat as the Member of Parliament for North-East St. Ann in the General Elections on October 16, 2002. (Gleaner, Thursday, October 17, 2002)

A unique presentation by Midge Miles, M.Ed. celebrating the light and the plight of women's story and spirituality. A prayerful and playful exploration through language, symbols, stories and metaphors of the ways in which the light of women have been extended or eclipsed in the Church and the world.

Midge Miles is a speaker and story-teller par excellence.
