Sam Myers Regatta   Regatta Awards   PSC Hosts Regattas   Junior Sailing Camp - August 7 - 11

Sam Myers Drifts By

by Lynda Green

Hot, sticky and slow.  Glassy lake.  Hazy horizons.  Those terms are not what you wanted to think about for the annual Sam Myers Memorial Regatta at PSC.  But, those were the terms to apply to this years rendition of our annual showcase regatta.

Saturday’s single race began with the Sunfish Class, gathering for their Regional Championships, struggling to cross the starting line.  Six more classes somehow followed across the line and drifted down the course and around the west, south and X marks under sweaty skies.

JY15’s, sailing their Midwest District Championships, FY’s, Fireballs, Force 5’s, canoes, a varied catamaran fleet and several boats in the open class covered the lake with limp sails.  Oh, there were some breezes and puffs.  The challenge lay in finding them.  The day did not promise improvement; thus, the race committee, headed by Frank Ewing, sympathetically cancelled the remaining races.

Sunday morning yielded enough of a slight breeze to launch a short out-and-back course for the ACA Canoe class.  An hour and a half later, however, only one craft had crossed the finish line.  Thus, the rest of the day’s races went into postponement as sailors rigged their boats in hopes of a miracle.

The winds did not cooperate, however, and by noon, the rest of the races, sadly, were cancelled.  Noone remembers a Sam Myers consisting of only one race.  But 2002’s version was just that:  one long slow drift.

Nevertheless, the comradeship, the opportunity to see old friends, the hospitality of PSC’s regatta committee and the wonderful culinary talents of the kitchen crew made the event enjoyable after all.  Sailing is flirting with nature, and nature sometimes plays these games with us.

In spite of the lack of wind and the small number of races--OK,just one race--Ray and all the decorated sailors deserve our hearty congrats and our continuing respect.  They are:

  • Bob Halsey Canoe Trophy: - Jim Botamer

  • PSC Registered Junior Sailor - Michael Braman

PSC Hosts Force 5’s, Cats, Mariners

By Lynda Green

Mariner Regionals are next.  This event is a PSC favorite.  The folks who traditionally man the committee boat for the Myers and have pitched in on so many club events get their special time on the water the weekend of July 27th and 28th.

Then. . .

Once the regattas are over--on August 3rd, to be exact--the Schmidts and Heaneys will host their popular German Fest dinner after the club races. Flyers were mailed earlier, so get your reservations in by July 26th. Join the festivities!

Jr. Sailing Camp - 2002

Once again this summer our dynamic sailing instructors and helpers, lead by Dave Fort, offer their skills and enthusiasm to members and friends.  Sailing camp dates are Wednesday, August 7, through Sunday, August 11.  The brochure will be mailed and is also available on the club website.  http://www.oocities.org/icydance/PSC/PSCJrSailingCamp02.htm.

Last year’s accounts of this experience give it great recommendations for juniors and adults alike.  Anyone who would like to hone their sailing and racing skills would benefit.  Donations of boats, time and culinary skills for the event are also welcome.

Contact Dave at 440-646-3885.
