Welcome to my Home Theater
This is just a little
page I'm putting together as my construction progresses. |
This is how things looked before I started tearing them down |
Looking towards the back wall and into the kitchen |
Back wall, the other side, I'll be removing the door |
More of the back side |
Okay, tearing sheetrock off the front left corner |

Half of the wall is up |
The other half |
Most of the framing |
This is where most of my gear is going |

Backside of the equipment rack |
More backside |
Look ma, no ceiling. I didn't want to rip it down
but I needed to for my new lights and it will make running the cable much
easier plus new construction lights are a lot cheaper. |
TV Stand. This is where the TV will sit, it will
be boxed in on all sides with particle board. |
I did a pretty good job when the house was built
running a bunch of my wires. Now I get to run some more. |
If you look closely at the above pictures, you can
see I made some changes. I now have a doorway to get back behind my false
wall. Much easier than stepping over the wall. |
The TV stand has changed too. It has moved up a
few inches and I've framed out a space for a center channel under the tv. |
Here is the projector mounting location, framed
the box, you can see the cables. |
Dad's little helper, wonder if I can get him to
help with the sheetrock? |
Here is a picture of the back
wall. It's open into the kitchen it's going to make a great family room, but
may not do so hot as a theater, but I'm working on ideas to cut out the light
and sound leakage. Wired for 7.1 with 12g HD wire. |
Media Panel, the heart and soul off my network,
video distribution, and IR Control man was that a ton of wires to run and
label. I may put another panel beside it but for now I should have enough
room in the panel once I relocate the modem. |
Looking at the AV rack, that bundle of cables is
what I ran just to the rack. |
Again the wall, pretty much the same except I got
wires now. |
Well ceiling is done, you can see the lights, I
really like the way they turned out you can also see the front wall and were
we stepped on the sheetrock, doh. But it worked out in the long run |
Back wall, hey wait a minute there used to be a
hole here, where did it go? I feel like I'm going backwards |
Front wall all cutout. You can see the spot on the
right for the rack and the left for the hidden door, spot for TV, and center
just now, I realize that the center is probably going to sound better in the
top, so I'm going to mock up the speakers and see how it sounds. |
Back wall, ah the hole is back, not much for
acoustics but it really makes the room more liveable. |
Well I’m got my previous home made screen up to
see how things are going to look. 45x80. I think I’m gonna hook up some stuff
and play around with speaker locations and such before I go to much farther.
Overall with the screen and lights in, I’m very please it was soooooo nice
to see progress and see things being built instead of torn apart |
Ah, another hole in the wall and the just keep getting bigger and bigger
so as you can see the center is now above the screen. Here is a pic without
the screen. |
And one with the screen up. |
Okay making more progress. I have started working on the AV rack and the
TV stand location, so far so good, although working with a router is interesting
if you haven't used one. Still have a bit more to go before I start mudding. |
I've started on the bookcase/hidden door. Here it is in place and it is swinging
back and forth. From a distance it looks pretty good. I still need to drill the
holes for the shelf supports but I think it will work for me. |
I've taken a closer pick and tacked up a piece of trim to see how well it will
be hidden. I think it will hide nicely. |
This is after the second layer of mud, looking from the kitchen into the
family room/theater. It should look nice when done, very open, great for family room
not so great for a theater. |
Looking at the front wall, rounded corners for tv area, basic stuff. After
mudding so far. I'm half and half on if I'd do it again. Any bigger of a room
and I'm hiring it out. |
Looking at back wall into kitchen. |
Front wall after final coat. Next step is sanding and primer |
Ceiling |
Back wall |
Woohoo, we have primer on the walls. It really makes a big improvement over
the bare sheetrock and mud. Front wall |
Side wall. I can still see a few places that may need some extra sanding or mud |
Back wall into the kitchen |
Other side wall towards bathroom and garage |

Temporary screen up checking size and projector location |
Projector up, it's too low, it's like an inch over my head when I stand |
Temporary ceiling mount. It's gonna need some work too. |
Attempt to take a pic of the texture on the walls |
This is where the texture on the wall blends with the other room. |

Bookcase/hidden door on the other side |
Trim going up, this is the opening between the family/theater room and kitchen |
Looking at the front wall, the center section is for a regular direct view TV |
My ceiling mount. I think I'm going to paint it green to match the ceiling. I
just wish the pipe was more perpendicular I'm going to try a new tube and see if that helps |

It's almost like opening gifts at Christmas. DaLite Model C HCMW 80x45 |
Showing the mounting for the screen and the soffit |
Closer look at screen mount. 2x4 with drywall screws into the wall and a lag bolt |
Screen is hung. |

Front of the room, ready for carpet |
Back of the room |
We have carpet, wow it is night and day the difference carpet makes. It feels
like a room now. No furniture yet as I need to get some more stuff done before the
furniture is in or it will never get done. |
Towards back |
Starting to put the rack in, it was just a shelf, decided at last minute on a
rack so a framed it out with 1x3's and will eventually be securing it with screws. |
Detail of rack area. I narrowed the opening with 1x3s screwed into the side.
The rack is screwed into these. |
Top half of a bare rack |
Bottom |
Soffit covering the screen is up. It hides the screen case really well. I hope
I don't want to change screens anytime soon. |
Opening in the bottom of the soffit for the screen. |
Soffit primed and textured. I'm glad its not going to be white |
Soffit painted, I still have to paint in where the screen rolls up but I need
a smaller brush to do that. But its looking a lot more like a room as I'm moving
more stuff in. |
Picture of rack mostly full. One of the bigger holes is for my htpc. Still deciding
if I should put it in or go a different route. |
Next Steps |
All the little things. |
