The Known Facts

Linda and Aisling Reynolds hail from Liverpool, which also gave us Sonia! Originally of Irish descent (hence Aisling's name), the girls come from a family of nine - three brothers and six sisters. 18-year-old Linda left her hairdressing job to join the group, while 16-year-old Aisling dropped out of A-Levels to embark on a pop career.

The girls pestered hitmaker Pete Waterman, in Liverpool recording his weekly radioshow, until he finally listened to their demo tape. He liked their voices and invited them to record at PWL Studios, the infamous Hit Factory, in London.

The idea for 'I'd Rather Jack' came about through a chance remark made by Matt Aitken, one third of hit-making trio Stock, Aitken and Waterman. The producers were talking about how useless Fleetwood Mac were when Matt spouted: "Hmmm...I'd rather jack." The rest, as they say, is history!

The video for 'I'd Rather Jack' was filmed in and around the girls' home city of Liverpool. If you look carefully you can see their family appearing as extras towards the end.

The Reynolds Girls and Stock, Aitken and Waterman parted company after just one single when the girls allegedly became 'too big for their boots'. With the backing of their dad they released the Mel and Kim-esque 'Get Real' on their own label (Renotone) - it failed to chart and they haven't been seen since!

Musing about 'I'd Rather Jack', Aisling says: "It's not about nuclear waste. It's got a great beat, there's humour in it, and it's now, it's today!"

In 1989 The Reynolds Girls joined acts including Big Fun (!), Halo James (!!) and Shooting Party (!!!) on the Hitman Roadshow. The girls' proud dad Walter was among the thousands who attended the shows and said: "I really enjoyed watching Jason (Donovan). And my girls of course! It was a bit loud on the ears though."

After overcoming first night nerves, the girls commented: "It really is a good atmosphere. All the bands are equally brilliant but Big Fun are incredible - they are going to be bigger than Bros!"
