Laurie's ReviewOkay, I'll give this ep a shot. I do like it but it's definitely not one of my faves, and I haven't watched it for awhile so my memory may be fuzzy on some details. I have to say I didn't find it overly realistic; the recurring romance novel readings and references were distracting and boring, but they did serve a purpose.
I think the following exchange is incredibly funny and despite the apparent caustic nature, it really indicates how comfortable Ray and Frannie are with each other. This is how she talks to her brother too. Ray doesn't seem to be at all offended by her remarks.
Ray: Frannie, you're a woman... apparently. What do women look for in a man?
Francesca: You're asking me? Why, what sick thing are you up to?
Ray: I'm just asking. I've got a friend. So, this love-at-first- sight thing. Is it legit? I mean, if you don't make a good first impression, are you dead in the water or what?" (stuffs sandwich in mouth)
Francesca: Well, you're not deformed ... or anything... really. I don't know. It really depends. Did you show her your disgusting tattoo or how far you could spit, or, that charming thing when you kick holes through the ceiling tiles?Isn't it interesting that in Odds, which follows this ep, Ray tells Fraser not to fall for Denny? Ray actively sought advice in A Likely Story. I don't know if he's in a position to dispense it so quickly. It didn't take him long to become authoritative in matters of the heart! Can anyone picture Ray Vecchio saying he doesn't know who has less sex? Or Fraser reacting in such a nonchalant manner to that kind of comment from Ray V?
There's no question that Seasons 3/4 are more mature than Seasons 1/2. Not only have the characters grown, the dialogue is more mature as well. The plot of this ep would have worked in Season 1 or 2, but the lines would have been very different.
I know it's supposed to be for laughs, but I think the campout in the park is also sad, almost as sad as Fraser ice fishing in Call of the Wild. No matter how hard he tries, he's not going to find a trace of home in the middle of Chicago. It's nice to see Ray trying to indulge him though.
This is an ep that I should watch more often, I know it would grow on me. The plot isn't the strongest, but I like the interpersonal dynamics. I give it a B- or B.
