A little about my favorite movies of 1972: Aguirre, the Wrath of God: The first Werner Herzog movie to make a big impact, all about deranged conquistadors wandering around the Amazon. Cabaret: What a wicked little film! Deliverance: This is what can happen when many talented people all contribute to a film: James Dickey, John Boorman, and a fine ensemble of actors. Plus there's that banjo thing. And the squealing thing. The Godfather: Francis Ford Coppola will never make a finer film. Play it Again, Sam: My favorite Woody Allen film, even though he didn't direct it. Only five decent movies came out in 1972!
