A little about my favorite movies of 1973:

American Graffiti: In addition to having a huge cultural impact,
though not as huge as his next film, this was also a good movie.

Badlands: The best of the Malick films, about a killin' spree.

The Exorcist: Another social phenomenon when it was released. I
don't think it was as scary as the hype, but it was still pretty
good, and 1973 was a slim year for the movies.

The Paper Chase: A fine meditation on the futility of grad school.
With an excellent acting job by John Houseman.

Robin Hood: Not a very good Disney movie at all, but 1973 was so
weak anyway that I threw it in.

Sleeper: Remember when Woody Allen was funny? They're still quoting
his lines about brown rice and smoking.

The Sting: Well, 1973 certainly was the year for movies making a
cultural impact. This movie propelled ragtime into the public eye,
and was pretty fun to watch too.

Theater of Blood: If I had to define b-movies, the Hammer horror films
seem to nail them, and this is one of their best. Vincent Price stars
as someone who takes revenge by killing people in the manner of several
Shakespeare plays. Who says b-movies lack culture?

The Wicker Man: Another b-movie, this time all about human sacrifice
and how important that was to pre-Christian Europe.
