A little about my favorite movies of 1978: Animal House: You may have heard of this one! Somehow this movie is better to remember than to sit through, which is almost a paradox. It's too bad you can't skip the actual watching part. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!: Actually this movie is pretty awful, but anyone with the nerve to actually make such a film, and feature cameos by the San Diego Chicken and Miss Potato Famine deserves my praise. La Cage Aux Folles: This film ran for something like five years in the theatres. It's probably very dated now, though Hollywood recently milked it for a remake, so maybe not. Another movie that feels like it could have been a play. Dawn of the Dead: I used to have nightmares about this movie, not over the monsters per se but over the incredibly bleak ending. Sometimes I still do. A b-movie from a b-movie king. Days of Heaven: One of the prettiest movies ever, if light on plot. This is one of only three movies directed by Terence Malick, who apparently doesn't like to make movies! And believe me, his last movie, "The Thin Red Line" was NOT one of the two that made his reputation. It was this one, and "Badlands." The Deer Hunter: I think this won all sorts of Academy Awards. Well, sometimes movies actually deserve them. Get Out Your Handkerchiefs: What a bizarre plot this movie had! I can't think of another film like it. Grease: Not a favorite of mine, but for sheer cultural impact there is no escaping this one. I used to have a housemate who had seen it over forty times, and she is by no means unique. Halloween: John Carpenter's best film. It sparked a horror film revival that is still with us, though much weaker. Still creepy even today! Midnight Express: Another semi-flawed movie from Alan Parker, but definitely worth careful watching.
