A little about my favorite movies of 1987: Moonstruck: An almost perfect film. "I ain't no freakin' monument to justice!" Raising Arizona: Another almost perfect film. Hey, this was a pretty good year for movies! Law of Desire: Almodovar films do not get much better than this. Straight to Hell: A big, BIG mess of a film, directed by and featuring most of the cast of "Repo Man" plus a then-unknown annoying Courtney Love, Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello, Jim Jarmusch, and the Pogues. You will either love this movie or hate it. I love it. The Stepfather: So creepy that for a long time I had nightmares about it. Otherwise, an ordinary thriller. Matewan: Powerful film about dirt-poor miners who go on strike, from John Sayles. Five Corners: John Patrick Shanley used to be so good; what happened to him? The only movie I know of to feature penguin-whacking. Adventures in Babysitting: Not just your average '80s teen movie, this one is full of urban legends woven into the story, plus the god of thunder! And the immortal line "don't FUCK with the babysitter." Planes, Trains & Automobiles: A movie that gets better the more you see it. Like "After Hours," it's like one of those nightmares where you keep trying to get somewhere but can't. Near Dark: Of all the vampire movies ever made, there was never one like this before. Joss Whedon put it on his short list, 'nuff said.
