Overview Healing Expressions strives to facilitate the expression of cancer patients’ thoughts, ideas, and emotions using art and photography. By intertwining art activities with volunteer-patient discussions, we create a more relaxing environment for patients and their families as they await and/or undergo treatment. In the clinics, Healing Expressions volunteers use self-contained art kits (including knitting, crocheting, and drawing), which are stored in the DCPSP waiting area. Volunteers may choose to work in either the Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, or Medical Treatment Center Clinics. While patients are allowed to work on their kits alone, we encourage volunteer interaction. Volunteer Requirements Healing Expressions volunteers are required to complete Duke Cancer Patient Support Program (DCPSP) volunteer training, a 2-3 hour session held in September that includes an active listening session, safety sensitivity training, and a guided tour of the clinics. Upon completion of this training, Healing Expressions volunteers become Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) certified volunteers. As such, volunteers are required to commit at least 1 hour a week to volunteering in the medical center. If you cannot complete your scheduled time slot to volunteer, you must contact an officer. You must also complete the Healing Expressions volunteer training -- a knitting and crocheting tutoring session. Attendance to monthly Healing Expressions meetings is also expected. |
