3D Online by Grandpa Chuck
I'm dating myself but when I first started out there was no Internet but instead University and College computers that one could dial up to and read/download text files. No images just text.
This was followed by Home and Business based Bulletin Boards but again these normally had one or two lines going into them and we still had just text files. These Bulletin Boards were mostly special interest boards offering an opportunity to post and read messages to the users.
Along came the Internet and the whole world opened up to us. Long before local ISPs there was basically just a few Internet Service providers such as American Online and Compuserve. But we had color, we had web pages, and it just exploded to where we are today.
Now there are 3D sites like Worlds.com , Active Worlds, Onlive Traveler, Second Life, and Cybertown which goes the next step with 3D images and voice generated chat. Users have the opportunity to choose the 3D "image or avater" that displays your appearance within the site as you visit from area to area taking part in the activities.
All of these communities use their own plugin to access their worlds, but they are free to download.
What will they think of next?
