Buy, Sell, or Trade by Grandpa Chuck

I did some research on the web site BlogShares.com after a number of comments appeared on Steve’s “Journals of the Week” Tag Board.

“BlogShares is a simulated, fantasy stock market for weblogs where players invest fictional money to buy stocks and bonds in an artificial economy where attention is the commodity and weblogs are the companies. Weblogs, or blogs for short, are valued by their incoming links from other known blogs.”

In short the more links you have coming to your journal from other journals the more your journal is worth on BlogShares!

“Anyone can play BlogShares for free, and ownership of a blog is not a requirement to participate. You need simply to register to receive a virtual $500 to start investing. Blog owners also receive 1000 shares of stock in their blog.

The overall objective of BlogShares is to explore the emerging social network, to provide a fun environment for bloggers and to add value to the network.”

Let me give an example using “Steve’s Web Journal Review @ Bravenet”. The current BlogShare value of Steve’s Journal is $10,006.92. Steve’s Journal has 48 incoming links and 52 outgoing links. The top rated journal (per BlogShare) on Steve’s journal is Jon’s Web Journal worth $479.865.97.

I’ll compare that to my Journal “Grandpa_Chuck’s Web Journal @ Bravenet”. The current BlogShare value of my journal is $12,399.47. My journal has 62 incoming links and 24 outgoing links. The top rated journal (per BlogShare) on my journal is The Tiger Lady’s Web Journal @ Bravenet worth $16,747.40.

In summary, BlogShares is a fantasy stock market for weblogs. Players get to invest a fictional $500 and blogs are valued by inbound links.

What does it mean? Nothing! It’s just a fantasy stock game that uses Blogs instead of Companies to invest in. Since it has been going on since early 2003 I don’t see anything to be concerned about! I doubt that General Electric or IBM executives loose any sleep over fantasy stock games that buy, sell, and trade their companies.
