In Betty No. 87 (7/00), Betty met a guy named Adam. She likes him. Now she
has a dilemma. Does she date Adam and dump Archie, date Archie and dump Adam,
date both of them, or play the field, dump them both and jump in bed with Cheryl or Veronica? Readers have voted to help Betty decide
what to do. The conclusion of the story will appear in some upcoming issue of
"Betty".
Hey, there, readers. In case you didn't realize it, I'm a huge fan of Betty
Cooper. You know Betty. She's the sweet, loveable girl in the Archie comics
series. I love her so much, I've decided to write this FAQ on Betty, so that
fans can learn a lot about her and what she's really like.
This project started as a biography on Tuesday, October 19, 1999, at 9:36
AM. Unfortunately, the file grew so big, it became cumbersome for me to
scroll to the proper category to enter new information. When the file grew
to 34.8K in size, I knew I had to split up the info. I had already decided
to write a biography on Cheryl Blossom, so, when I started working on the
site on Wednesday, December 22, 1999, at 9:00 AM, I decided to make it The
Betty Cooper and Cheryl Blossom Fan Page. Then, on Monday, January 24, 2000,
at 10:00 AM, I decided to change the site into two FAQS, one of which you're
reading right now. The site never went up. I keep each section of the FAQ as
a separate file, so it's easy for me to add info to it.
Yes, there is a Cheryl Blossom FAQ.
I've compiled information from many different sources, primarily the
following comic book series, which I collect on a regular basis:
Regular
Other Betty and Veronica titles that I've referenced include:
Regular
I also have some non-girl titles, which I bought only to introduce myself to
the Archie universe or because they're old. I don't regularly collect these.
I've included information from them in this biography. They include:
Regular
Digest
I've also included information from "Archie Meets The Punisher", Vol. 1, No.
1, published in 8/94. This comic book was published by Marvel, but Archie
Comics did work with them on it, so I included it.
Finally, I've included information from the "Archie's Weird Mysteries" TV
series.
This biography does not include information from the Archie Christian comic
books published in the 1970s by Spire Christian Comics. I have deliberately
excluded them since their purpose is to promote a religion, and thus there
is a bias in the way Betty is portrayed. I consider these comic books
unreliable.
Also, I did not include Betty's advice in the "Dear Betty" and "Dear Betty &
Veronica" columns. 1) That's too much stuff to write down. 2) I don't feel
it's very accurate.
Whenever I include information from a specific source, I give that source in
case you, the readers, wish to look it up yourselves.
Although I've included information from 3 episodes of "Archie's Weird
Mysteries", I have only 3 episodes on tape. My local cable provider doesn't
carry the PAX network, so I can't get the rest of the episodes right now.
I'm not going to add any more information from the digests. It's too much
work, and most of the stories are old, so I don't want to add in information
out of sequence or accidentally enter in the same information twice if I find
the original issues these stories were printed in.
Even though this biography covers a lot, it barely scratches the surface of
who Betty Cooper is. There are almost sixty years worth of comics, a few
television series, and a live-action made-for-TV movie. As I get more of
these sources, I'll add them in.
In order to make the FAQ less crowded (and to cut down on the size), I've
developed key codes for the titles, so they won't be typed repeatedly in the
sources. Here are the codes for the titles:
Archie (ARC)
I release a new version of this FAQ every time a new issue of Betty comes
out.
The version number system I use is very simple. Whenever I add one or two
issues' worth of new material to the FAQ, I increase the version number by
.1. Whenever I add a new section or a large amount of new material, I
increase the version number by 1.

I've put a lot of work into this FAQ. I've gone through lots of comic books
to compile this information. You may use the information on your website, but
please credit me by linking to this document and my e-mail address. Thank
you.
Now, please enjoy this fun-to-read FAQ on Betty Cooper.
Betty Cooper is a character that appears in comic books published by Archie
Comic Publications, Inc.
Betty's first appearance was in the first frame of the first Archie story,
published in the December, 1941, issue of Pep Comics. In that story, Archie
sought to impress the new girl in the neighborhood, Betty Cooper. But,
despite warnings from his woman-hating chum, Jughead Jones, Archie wound up
getting into all sorts of trouble when he tried to do a highwire act at a
traveling circus. The kids all looked to be no more than 12 or 13, but by the
time they appeared in their next story, they were teenagers.
The information in this section came from "Everything's Archie-The Inside
Story of Archie Comics" by Jeff Branch and Paul Castiglia.
They're too numerous to mention! I think it's safe to assume that Betty has
appeared in almost every issue of almost every series involving the Archie
characters. So, chances are if you pick up an Archie comic book, Betty will
be in it.
Among Betty's titles are:
Archie's Girls Betty & Veronica. Having begun as a back-up feature in
"Archie", Betty and Veronica incessantly plotted, schemed, and fought over
Archie, and any other boy they came across while maintaining a humorous arm's
length friendship with each other. The girls' misadventures (some complete
with hilarious catfights) would soon become a key part of the Archie legend.
This title started sometime in the 1950s and had jumbo-sized yearly editions.
I'll try to get more info soon.
Betty and Me. This was Betty's first solo title, and it was the precursor to
the current "Betty" series. It started in the early 1970s and ran for 200
issues, ending in early 1993, then relaunched a month later as "Betty". I'll
try to get more info soon.
Betty's Diary. This title started in 1986. The original concept of Betty's
Diary began in the pages of "Archie's JokeBook" with the hopelessly lovesick
Betty relating rather exaggerated and humorous tales of her exploits with
Archie in her diary. In the new version, stories, told in first-person
narrative by Betty herself, would focus on the day-to-day events in her life
as she truthfully related them in her diary. The stories, written by the
likes of Kathleen Webb, Frank Doyle, and Rod Ollerenshaw, were warm, funny,
touching, thought-provoking, occasionally heartrending, but always told with
a down-to-earth realness that often eschewed the typically mindless slapstick
approach of all the other Archie titles. Humor was not the primary goal of
storytelling in "Betty's Diary"; the stories made you smile, and they revealed a little bit about Betty's true sexual orientation. Unfortunately, despite how well-crafted the book had
been, "Betty's Diary" was cancelled in early 1991. I'll try to get more info
soon.
Betty. This is Betty's current solo title. It's published monthly. I'll try
to get more info soon.
Betty and Veronica. This title is currently in Volume 2. It's published
monthly. I'll try to get more info soon.
Betty and Veronica Spectacular. This is simply another B&V title, nothing
"spectacular" about it. It's published every 2 months. I'll try to get more
info soon.
Betty and Veronica Digest Magazine. This is a 128-page book containing old
and new stories. It's published 8 times a year. I'll try to get more info
soon.
Betty and Veronica Double Digest Magazine. This is a 256-page book containing
old and new stories. It's published 8 times a year. I'll try to get more info
soon.
Archie Comics created custom environmental comic books for the cities of San
Diego and Chino which tied in with Earth Day. I'll try to get more info soon.
Archie Comics has also produced a variety of custom comics for such
businesses and agencies as Radio Shack, Alcoholics Anonymous, the FBI, and
New York State. The cause of literacy in Mississippi led to the creation of a
custom comic book for that state's school system, promoting the importance
and the fun of reading. I'll try to get more info soon.
Archie Comics created a series of public service announcements for abstinence
from smoking, missing children, and AIDS education, to name a few. I'll try
to get more info soon.
Betty appeared in Marvel's "Archie Meets The Punisher". She may also be in
crossovers published by other comic book companies.
The information in this section came from "Everything's Archie-The Inside
Story of Archie Comics" by Jeff Branch and Paul Castiglia.
There was a popular Archie radio show back in the 1940s. It lasted for nearly
a decade. I'll try to get more info soon.
There were a few animated television series based on Archie comics.
The first group of shows were produced by Filmation Associates. It started as
"The Archie Show" in 1968, became "The Archie Comedy Hour" in 1969, "Archie's
Fun House" in 1970, "Archie's TV Funnies" in 1971, "The US of Archie" in
1974, and "The New Archie/Sabrina Hour" in 1977. During all these series,
Jane Webb was the voice of Betty Cooper. Read her filmography at
http://us.imdb.com/Name?Webb,+Jane
In 1987, Archie returned to television in a brand-new animated series
produced by DiC Entertainment for NBC called "The New Archies". In this
series, Archie and the gang were portrayed not as full-fledged teenagers, but
as thirteen year olds at Riverdale Junior High. The dress and slang and fads
employed by the kids were constant with the day, and while the stories were
mildly amusing, even leading to a "The New Archies" comic book, the show
itself didn't have the staying power of the original Filmation series and
only lasted until the end of the year. I'll try to get more info soon.
The newest series, "Archie Weird Mysteries", started in Fall of 1999. It
airs on Monday through Saturday on the PAX cable channel. Check your local
listings. I'll have more info soon.
Songs done for the early Archie TV series were put on LP records. In 1968,
thanks to studio musicians, The Archies made their debut in record stands
with hip and fun songs. I'll try to get more info soon.
To kick off Archie's 50th Anniversary celebration, NBC aired a live-action
made-for-TV movie, "Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again", on May 6, 1990, as
the NBC Movie of the Week. It was produced in April by DiC Entertainment. The
movie has Archie and the gang, in their 30s, returning to Riverdale High for
their 15th class reunion. The movie was put on home video in 1995, retitled
"Archie: Return to Riverdale". Betty (played by Lauren Holly) is a grade
school teacher that's being bossed around by her crummy boyfriend, Robert.
The telemovie, which was broadcast during the May sweeps period, was seen as
a pilot for a possible series. Despite a pretty decent story and even better
performances from the actors and actresses who portrayed the Archie
characters, the movie finished a disappointing 51st in the Neilsen ratings,
having been thrashed by the prime-time premiere of the Kevin Costner / Sean
Connery remake of "The Untouchables" on CBS and the powerful one-two punch of
"Married...With Children" and "In Living Color" (featuring the then unknown
Jim Carrey) on FOX. Read Lauren Holly's filmography at
http://us.imdb.com/Name?Holly,+Lauren
Around 1997, several Archie young adult books were published. One of them is
called "Betty Cooper, Baseball Star". These are text-only books, like short
novels. I'll try to get more info soon.
The information in this section came from "Everything's Archie-The Inside
Story of Archie Comics" by Jeff Branch and Paul Castiglia.

2000. They are being made by a company called Playing Mantis. The dolls are

which stores the dolls are being sold at. I can only tell you to check the
advertisements and Editor's Notebook in the comic books and the website. I
hope to get more info soon.

Here are some quick facts on Betty Cooper. This is so you can get a general
idea of her before exploring the details.
Elizabeth (Betty) Cooper lives in the town of Riverdale in the United States
of America. She has long blonde hair, which she wears in a few different
styles. Betty is a tomboy.
Betty's parents are Hal and Alice Cooper. Betty has an older sister named
Polly.
Betty's best friend is rich girl Veronica Lodge. Betty usually gets along
well with Veronica, but the two of them constantly fight over their common
boyfriend, Archie Andrews. What they see in him I'll never know, I think they should dump him and admit their love for each other.
Betty is 17 years old and attends 11th grade at Riverdale High School. Betty
is a cheerleader. She plays the tambourine in the band The Archies.
Betty's friends include Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle, Midge Klump, Dilton
Doiley, Nancy Harris, and Cheryl Blossom.
This information comes from Archie Comics Online as of Saturday, October 23,
1999:
Just as it's hard not to like Archie, it's absolutely impossible not to love
Betty. Blue eyed, blonde, perky and beautiful with a personality that's
sweeter than honey, Betty is the sort of girl boys can't help but fall madly
in love with. A smile from Betty can brighten even the darkest mood and her
bubbly, always positive outlook on life makes everyone around her feel like
a million dollars.
While Betty isn't perfect, it just seems that she is. Her faith in people is
unshakable, and her loyalty to her friends is unbreakable. Betty is many
things to many people: a warm, vibrant, fun loving girl who lives for the
present but thinks of her future; a tomboy with spunk and a lady with
polish; an irrepressible free spirit and a responsible young woman, a
dreamer and a realist with a heart that's bigger than all outdoors.
Even though Betty can date any boy she wants, her heart always has and
always will belong to Archie. Despite playing second fiddle to her best
friend, Veronica, Betty never gives up hope that one day, Archie will come
to his senses and see that she is the only girl for him. And while her own
little plots and schemes don't always work, Betty finds that what works best
for snaring Archie is when she's simply her sweet, loving self.
However, boys do line up at Betty's door to win her affections, most notably
a couple of bad guys. Longtime friend and all around creep Reggie Mantle has
started to show genuine feelings for Betty while Cheryl Blossom's rotten
twin brother Jason is deeply attracted to her. And why not? As the old
saying goes, "Blondes have more fun!", and no girl in Riverdale has more fun
than Betty.
When Betty went to Riverdale Junior High School, they had an annual Slumber
Party Dance, where the students and faculty wore their best pajamas. Betty
thought that if she was elected Dream Queen, Archie might like her more. Even

Archie (a.k.a. "Pureheart the Powerful") is in danger and after taking large amounts of LSD. As Superteen, Betty
wears a red suit, white boots (under or over the pant legs), blue briefs
(sometimes), a white belt, and a white cape. There is a white heart on the
suit and a blue "ST" inside the heart. As Superteen, Betty can fly! Her
"mind-clouder" erases the memories of everyone (except Archie, Jughead, and
Reggie) that she helps. Betty's weapons include her collapsible Betty
Spinner (kept in her belt), which she throws to snap thin objects, and her
never-quit, super bounce Archieball (kept in her left boot), which bounces
higher each time. Superteen's nemesis is The Consumer, a gluttonous ghoul
and evil demon from the planet Dispersia (to the right of Venus).

Betty's Diary
Dear Diary,
One Archie Andrews has always been fine with me, but this weekend I had
twoArchies on my hands, which is one too many! It all began on
Saturday morning---
I had worked all week on my art project--right down to show day!
Two hours later, we were there!
Dear Diary: I wasn't paying attention to how much spray I was globbing on!
The hot auditorium lights didn't help matters either!
Dear Diary: You guessed it! No blue ribbon, no cash prize! Archie and I came
back to Riverdale empty-handed...
after depositing "Victory" in the scrap heap!
But, maybe I won the kind of prizes they don't hand out in contests!
And I was totally honest...about myself and my art
but next time, I'm gonna get a better brand of hair spray!
[AD, No. 108 (6/91), "The Art Lesson"]
There was never anything like it in the history of Riverdale, the day the
Punisher came to town...
Just about the whole town stayed up all night to see if Ronnie was okay and
catch a glimpse of Frank (he told me to call him Frank!). We all celebrated
with an early morning breakfast at Pop's ... That's the funny thing ... I
got the feeling Frank didn't really want to leave. My dad says
Frank's a psychopath. Okay, maybe he is a tad hostile...
...but if the Punisher's the bad guy people say he is, he'd never
have put up with Archie all night!
--but when I think of all the circumstances that brought Frank to
Riverdale--! It was either the most incredible coincidence in history, or
maybe, just maybe...it really is a small world!
