I didn't really like American Beauty. But it doesn't suck.

I didn't agree with Spacey's character as the father allowing his daughter to date a drug dealer.
I just couldn't get past that thought: if I was the father, I would not let my daughter date a drug dealer. I doesn't matter how hip I thought I was. But then, I wouldn't spend $2,000 on dope, either. The daddy daughter dope thing keeps me from liking it.

BUT...

When Spacey hears that the Mena Suvari girl is a virgin, and he decides not to screw her, that's when I like the movie.

I like that he found his limitations. I like that he discovered that he was not a total asshole. Because I think he was trying to see just how much of an asshole he could be. And when he found out, he stopped.

"Stop being such an asshole."
