One of the things I remember saying often when I was a kid when things didn’t go my way was “that’s not fair!”  Somewhere along the way in my early childhood I got the mistaken notion that life was supposed to be fair.  However, as with most people, as I grew into adulthood, I realized more and more that life doesn’t really concern itself with such notions as “fair” and “unfair.”  An unbeliever is left with this unsettling nihilistic feeling in the pit of their stomachs when they contemplate the unfairness of life; which is why most unbelievers seek the solace of pursuing momentary pleasures—they are desperately seeking the bliss of ignorance.

Yet, to the follower’s of Christ, the situation is much different.  We know why the world is unfair. It is the result of sin—originally the sin of Adam & Eve, and subsequently the sinful decisions of generations of people throughout the ages.  Furthermore, we also know that as a result of the sin of Adam & Eve, God subjected the world to a curse which makes life even more difficult.

The good news lies in the fact that with Jesus Christ in our lives we have faith that God is working out all things for his glory and our good.  The Christian life isn’t easier than the life of an unbeliever, but it is filled with more hope!  We know there is a sovereign God who carries out his will for all things according to his wisdom and knowledge.  The believer lives his life by faith, not sight!  That is what the message of Habakkuk is all about, and is summed up in the book’s key verse:  “But the righteous shall live by his faith” (Habakkuk 2:4b; ESV).

It is my prayer that these comments on the book of Habakkuk will bless you and help you in the struggle which is the Christian life!

Amen!
