Question:

What does Deuteronomy 29:29 mean when it says:  "The secret things belong to the Lord our God , but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever , that we may observe all the words of his law."

Does this mean we can’t know all things?  That some things God will keep to himself?

Answer:

You are correct in your understanding of this verse.  God has only revealed certain things to us.  God is infinite in knowledge and understanding, we are finite.  There are just certain things that our finite minds cannot comprehend.  Let's face it, even some of the things God has revealed to us are beyond us.  For example, the Bible says that the gospel offer is free to anyone who receives it with an broken and contrite heart.  Yet, the Bible also says that if you are a follower of Christ, it is because God has set His love on you before the creation of the world.  Only God knows how these two truths fit together because I sure don't.

Here's a good NT equivalent to Deuteronomy 29:29:  "Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!" (Romans 11:33).
