Fifteen

Kate rolled over onto her back, a smile on her face as she glanced at the empty space next to her, it had been a dream.  A nice dream but a dream none the less, the sun still shone as she got out of bed and walked to the bathroom to shower and dress.  She was due in work by 9am but was now willing herself to actually go, she opened the curtains and took in the view, the ocean was always beautiful in the morning, smiling to herself Kate watched people come and go “Jessie” she said aloud. “Jessica!” she added as she rushed outside.

She threw open the door and sprinted down the three wooden steps, calling out Jessica’s name. “Jessie” she said, the toddler smiled.  Boy she had her daddy’s smile “Katy” she replied happily, Kate crouched down coming face to face with her. “Hey sweetie” she cried as she took her in her arms. “Daddy away” she said, Kate sniffed happily. “Yeah honey I know” she replied as she hugged her close.

“We came down last night” Kate turned to find Christian’s mother standing. “We?” she asked hopefully, the woman signalled to her Grand-daughter. “Oh” Kate tried not to sound too disappointed, “Looks like it’s just gonna be me and Jessica” both women sat down on Kate’s steps. “I’m sorry…if there’s anything I can do?” the woman frowned, “Thanks I’ll bare it in mind” Kate watched Jessica make sandcastles. “Chris use to build the biggest sandcastles, we use to have competitions to see who’s was the best” Kate laughed, his mother saddened “Yeah he always was competitive and protective to” she said sorrowfully.

“Are you gonna come then mom?” she glanced down at her eight year old. “Sure hon…I just need to get changed outa my uniform okay?” he smiled up at her, “Okay” he said before skipping off.

Minutes later she emerged, dressed for summer in an old cotton dress. Maggie smiled as she fell into step with her. “The kids have gone already” she mentioned, Inger sighed, “Chris’ll be checking out the competition” Maggie laughed as they entered the local park. “Hello Mrs Bryant” Maggie greeted the woman, who smiled. “Hello Maggie…I saw your little Katy hanging around with…” the woman retorted, stopping abruptly on seeing Inger. “Chris…yeah I know they’re quite inseparable aren’t they?” Maggie replied then walked on. “I wish she’d give my Chrssy a break…he ain’t a bad kid not really…a bit wild yeah but he ain’t bad.” Maggie pushed her way to the front and stood watching Christian and Kate playing in the distance. “I wander what they two will be like as grown ups?”, Inger smiled. “I’d love Katy to go to college and make something of her life” Maggie muttered, Inger stared at the two kids. “It takes Chrissy all his time to go to school” his mother laughed as she watched the bunch of over excited eight year olds get into line. Christian looked across to where his arch rival Mickey Bryan stood then looked at his mother and waved just as they were told to run.  He completely missed the start but sprinted as fast as his tanned little legs would take him, his mother screamed his name as she watched him move up and get in behind Mickey Bryant.  Kate who was beside Mickey smiled as she edged just in front of him, which the child didn’t relish, he’d never live down being beaten by a girl and promptly tripped her up.

Christian saw red immediately and before anyone could stop him he was on top of Mickey punching him repeatedly. “Chrisssy Noooooooo!” his mother cried as she sprinted across to him. “Get off of him!” she heard Aggie Bryant’s voice echo around, “You…you little animal!”

Christian stood his ground. “He tripped Katy!”

“Don’t you dare talk back to me young man?"

“But…”

“Another word and I will slap you so hard!”

“And I’ll punch you right on the mouth!” Christian glanced up to where his mother stood, her hands now on his shoulders

“Well no wonder he’s like he is!”

“What’s that suppose to mean?”

“Well with you as his mother!”

“Really…well at least I’m not the town gossip!  I mean who the hell needs the newspapers when we got you Mrs Bryant!  Before you go shooting your mouth off just take a look at your own kin!  Because they make very entertaining subjects!”

Christian watched his mother through impressive eyes, “Way to go mom” he praised as she took his hand. “Come on…let’s get outa here what you say we go grab some candies?” he grinned up at her, “Wow sure” he said as he glanced at Kate. “Can Katy come to?” his mother smiled then nodded, “Yeah sure” he signalled for her to come along,  both kids rushed down the street towards the snack bar leaving their mothers in their wake.

I always thought you and Chris would get it together one day” Kate heard the woman mention sadly, she glanced at her watch then sighed.

“Really?”

“Yeah, don’t get me wrong I liked Georgia but I was surprised he never ever chose you”

“Well he’s stupid…I always knew he were stupid”

“Yeah, now look where that stupidity’s gotten him…I still can’t believe he’s in that goddamn place”

“Yeah me to”

“He hasn’t even sent a visitor slip or anything Kate; do you think he blames me?”

Kate stared at her, “Why?  Why would he blame you?”

“Well if I hadn’t gotten together with Larry…”

“Don’t do this to yourself…you can’t change it…what we gotta concentrate on now is how we’re gonna get him outa there!”

“It’s hopeless”

“No it ain’t…we gotta try something…Chris wont survive in a place like that!”

“But what?  What the hell do we do?”

“I’ll think of something…I’ll come over tonight after work okay?”

Inger nodded up to where Kate now stood. “Okay…what time do you get off?”

Six thirty

“Okay…come over for dinner”

Kate nodded happily as she glanced once again at her watch. “Okay” she said then walked briskly to her car.

“If you make that shot Briggo then I’m the Goddamn president Marazzi said as Christian bent over the pool table “Top pocket man…watch and learn” he retorted as he drew back the cue and was just about to take the shot when Japp approached. “Warden’s office Ingebrigtsen” he straightened up and handed the cue to Kinsella.

Warden Hardie was a small bald man in his mid fifties and a man not to be messed with, which Christian was about to learn to his cost. He looked up then grunted something, “So you’re Ingebrigtsen?” Christian frowned but never replied, “What the hell do you know about this?”

Christian glanced down at the piece of paper noting the numbers on it “I don’t know nothing!”

“Is that a fact…what’s say we give the number a call?”

“Do what you like man!”

Japp moved swiftly.  One punch and Christian was once again floored, the man standing over him “You show the warden some respect, you son of a bitch!”

“I called the number already”

“So? What’s that gotta do with me?” said Christian gasping for breath.

“Don’t take me for a fool boy!”

Christian got to his feet, eyes wide.  He hated to be called boy!

“What the hell did you call me?”

“Boy!  I called you boy! Got anything to say?”

Christian lurched over the desk and punched the man twice before being restrained. “Don’t ever call me boy!  Don’t ever!” he yelled while still being held.

The man came round the desk and stared at a now struggling Christian. “I” he began as he caught him by the hair forcing his head back. “Shall call you what I damn well please…you’re the scum of the earth and don’t you forget it. BOY!” he sniped, “Get him outa here, all leisure activities revoked for a week!  You ever use my cellular phone again and I’ll have you,” he threatened before signalling for them to leave.

As soon as Marazzi saw the guards leave his cell he rushed upstairs to find Christian just crawling onto his bunk having suffered yet another beating. “Wow you never learn do ya bud” he opened one eye and tried to focus, “Wow they really went to town on ya today didn’t they?” Christian placed an arm over his eyes, “Well what happened?” Brown and Kinsella asked together. “Wow…bastards…you okay bud?” asked Brown looking concerned, Christian nodded. “Was it the phone?” Kinsella cut in looking equally concerned, “Yup…I got all leisure activities revoked”

“Sorry bud”

“It’s okay…it’s worth it to hear my kid”

“Maybe the doc should take a look at those cuts?” said Kinsella

“I’m okay”

“You are bleeding pretty badly,” Marazzi told him.

“I’ll be okay”

All three men exchanged glances, “We’ll go…holler if you need us” said Marazzi.  Christian nodded then closed his eyes drifting off into an uneasy sleep.
