Twenty Two

Kate stared up at the rain filled sky then got into her car, it was October and another day over, another day without Christian, boy she missed him so much. “Kate are you sure you won’t come for a meal with me?” she glanced at her colleague then shook her head. “Thanks, but I have to get home, maybe some other time?” he nodded disappointedly, and then walked away.  If only she could forget Christian, she could be happy with someone else.  Who was she trying to kid, she never could resist him; all he had to do was flash her that dimpled grin and she was his once again….

“Are you sure about this Kate?” she nodded eagerly as she wrapped her arms around his neck pulling him down on top of her, they were alone in her house and were now in her room. “What was that?” he panicked, she smiled “Will you relax” he stared down at her then smiled “What if your rents come back early?” she kissed him, “They wont” he stopped. “But…” she stared at him “Chris do you want to make love to me yes or no?” she demanded. “Sure” he replied “Well get on with it then before my rents really do come home”

A smiled curved at her lips as she pulled out of the parking lot, he had been her first and she still remembered it to this day, switching on the radio she begun her journey home, just as she’d done many times before but this time was special, the radio played their song, the one Christian sang to her when he was trying to embarrass her.

Summer came and left without a warning.

All at once I looked and you were gone.

Now you’re looking back at me, searching

For a way that we can be like we were

Before.

A single tear rolled down her cheek as she listened to the words their words.

Now I’m back to what I knew before you.

Somehow the city doesn’t look the same.

I’d give my life for one more night, having you here

And holding you tight.  Oh please take me there again.

Suddenly she pulled over and let the tears flow, she hadn’t cried, not like this, she’d been so busy keeping it together but now she just couldn’t stop the tears, five years of heartache now visible and the song played on.

And I remember how you loved me.

Time was all we had until the day we said goodbye.

And I remember every moment.

Of those endless summer nights.

She hadn’t even notice the cops pull up behind her, until he was crouching by her door, a worried look in those deep blue eyes. “You okay ma’am?” she rolled down her window a little. “Yeah, sorry I’m just going” he smiled down at her.

“Okay, drive carefully ma’Am.”, she nodded as she threw the car into gear and took off.

“Is she okay?” Jo inquired, unaware that it had been Kate, Adams had spoken to, he nodded as he got back into the car. “Yeah, probably some domestic, so you ready?  We can go do some work now huh?” Jo grinned triumphantly; she was now armed with Shelby Geddes’s last known address.

As soon as they entered the precinct they were met by their chief. “Oh so you two jokers have decided to show up at last, get your butts in here right now!” Jo drew in a deep breath then followed the man inside, where she and Adams received a rollicking “I wanna see every single fucking thing you two jokers have got on the Gonzales case right now!” they were bawled at, “Great Logan, I really needed that” Adams said as soon as he emerged. “Sorry” she said hastily as they hurried back to their desk.

“You better give him the files” said Adams.

“What files?”

“The ones on the Gonzales case”

“Oh the ones you got”

“I don’t have them!”

“Well I don’t either”

“Shit Logan!  We’ve gone and fucking lost them!”

“Err I didn’t lose them!”

“Well I didn’t lose them either”

“I’m fucking waiting here!” they heard the chief cry from his office.

“Great!  You better go tell him”

Jo gasped “Me!”

“Yeah you”

“Someone better get their butt in here quick fucking smart”

Adams if he shouts at me I’ll cry”

“Oh and I wont?”

Adams please”

“Fine, but you better fucking start looking!”

“Okay”

Christian straightened when an inmate whispered something into his ear, shock washing over his face.

 “What’s up?” asked Kinsella.

Christian threw down the cue and rushed upstairs, taking two at a time.

“Maaaaaaaaaz!” he yelled out in panic. “Marazzi”

Kinsella followed, “Brig what’s wrong?” he called as he to, took the stairs two at a time. “Oh Jesus!” he said in a low tone.

Christian entered his cell slowly, “Maz” he said quietly.

Marazzi was sitting on the floor head in hands.

“Maz” Christian said again as he placed a hand on his friends shoulder, he shrugged it free. “Maz it’s me” Christian spoke gently.  Marazzi looked at him his expression pained. “Oh God!  Please tell me he didn’t?” no reply, both men exchanged knowing glances. “I’ll kill him I’ll fucking kill him”

Christian suddenly yelled, then shot from the room.  Kinsella in hot pursuit, “Brown Brown catch him” he yelled downstairs to where Leroy Brown stood.  “Why what’s the hell’s going on?” Kinsella flew down to meet them.

“I think Crazy Jake got Maz”

“What?”

“Brig’s gonna kill him”

Brown caught Christian around the waste stopping him in his tracks.

“Don’t fucking stop me”

“Listen to me” Brown began as he placed both hands on Christian’s shoulders restraining him long enough for him to listen. “You got a real good chance of getting your ass outa here, don’t fucking blow it on shit like him, go back to Maz coz he needs you, me and Kinsella will take care of that shit-head okay?”

Christian remained silent.

“Okay?” Brown said firmly.

“Yeah okay”

“Good” said Brown as he signalled for Kinsella to follow him.

Crazy Jake looked up when Brown entered his cell, a look of horror now visible on his face. “You touched one of mine Jake, that weren’t a very healthy thing to do” Brown hissed.

“Me not touch him” the guy defended.

“Oh but you did”

“No he not let me”

“D’you think that’s gonna fucking stop me Jake, you’ve had it coming for a long time”

“No please no”

Brown merely smirked then whistled for Kinsella to enter the cell.
