Thirty Two

The back door of the transit opened and there stood detective King.  Jo felt herself relax as she got out.  “Quick, they are getting away” she screamed at them.  King merely stood grinning, “Who?” he inquired, Jo looked past him to where a car was now pulling away.

“Geddes and Anderson, they’re getting away”

“Sorry, who?”

Jo rolled her eyes.  “Detective King.” She started to say, moving forward she felt something soft against her foot.  She looked down and moved back, a startled expression crossing her face.  King looked down to where Lloyd’s lifeless body lay, “Messy business that, but he was in the way you see?”  She looked confused.

“I don’t understand, any of this, what’s going on?”

“You don’t have to concern your pretty little head with any of this”

“What happened to Detective Lloyd?” she sobbed.

“I told you, he got in the way, so I had to shoot him.”

“You shot him, well is he dead?”

“Yeah I’m afraid he is but don’t concern yourself, I’m sure your death will be just as painless”

Jo watched him pull out his gun and point it straight at her.

Christian rubbed at the back of his head as he to got out of the van, King sneering as he stared at him.  “What are you gonna do?” said Jo, flinching away from the cold steel.  “Well I ain’t gonna do anything, you on the other hand are gonna die, coz, now here’s the deal and it’s really quite fab actually, Ingebrigtsen here is gonna shoot you, I mean, he’s already shot Lloyd, then he’ll shoot you and I’ll just have to shoot him”

“You won’t get away with it” sobbed Jo.

“Oh but I will, I mean who the hell’s gonna suspect?”

Jo braced herself as she watched Christian being thrown to the ground once again, “You know son, killing you is gonna be a pleasure” King Laughed, but Christian had other ideas, he moved swiftly and had just about recovered enough strength to disarm King. “Run Logan” he yelled, Jo hesitated for a second, “I said run before he kills us both!” This time she obeyed and took off along the old narrow two lane.

King seized hold of his victim and pushed him to the ground once more, Christian’s face pressing against the dirt road as Kings foot secured him there, “You stupid stupid idiot, she ain’t going far” he spat, as sirens rang out in the distance and Christian knew, if he could only hold on he’d be safe.

Mark held on for dear life.  He had never really trusted women drivers and now he knew why, Hollie was racing down the dirt road, her foot to the floor, sirens sounded in the distance, “They must be on this road somewhere” she muttered, Mark drew in a deep breath and closed his eyes.  “Holy Shit!!!” he cried out as he looked through the back window to where a large truck was just disappearing.

“Where the hell did you learn to drive!”

“What?  Mark my sister’s life is in danger and you’re worried about my driving?”

“Well yeah!  Coz right now hon it’s my life that’s in danger!”

“Oh shut up and keep looking”

He turned his face away and stared out of the side window.

“STOP!!!”

She pressed her foot on the break, the car screeching to a halt.

“WHAT!!!”

“You nearly run over that little bunny rabbit”

“You what?  Mark this ain’t no joke” she screamed at him, his left arm went straight up, shielding his head from the reign of blows now being aimed at his head. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” he apologised, Hollie moved off once again.

Minutes later they came across a white transit van, a body lay beside it, and someone came forward and flagged them down.  Mark looked a little cautious.  “Oh it’s Detective King, its okay I know him, he works with Jo” Hollie said as she pulled up along side.

“Boy am I glad to see you, there’s been an incident, my partner’s been killed, Ingebrigtsen managed to break free, I told your sister to run”

Hollie felt her heart thud against her chest.

“Jo, she’s okay ain’t she?”

“Yeah but I need your car”

“Sure”

Mark placed a hand on Hollie’s arm, preventing her from getting out.

“Where the hell’s Ingebrigtsen now?” he asked.

“What?”

“I wanna know where he is”

“Get outa the god damn car!”

Hollie drew in a deep breath then got out, she’d never experienced anything like this before, at least Mark was there, he’d know what to do.

“Over there” they were both instructed.

“Why are you doing this?” Hollie asked.

“Because I can”

Mark placed a hand on the small of Hollie’s back, motioning her over towards the van, Christian lay bruised and bleeding, “I- didn’t- kill -no one” he said between gasps, King kicked his side and told him to shut up, “So, what the hell am I gonna do with you two?”

Hollie’s eyes darted across to where Mark stood.

“Killing you would be very messy, shit man; this wasn’t part of the plan.”

“Then don’t kill us, I’d rather stay alive anyway” Mark replied.

“Ah but you’re here now”

“I don’t understand, you said that Ingebrigtsen killed Lloyd”

“Yeah I did didn’t I, I lied!  So who to kill first”

He raised his gun and pointed it straight at Hollie’s head.

“No!  If you’re hell bent on killing anyone, kill me!” yelled Mark, surprising himself, more than anyone else, King sneered.  “Oh how very gallant, sure I’ll kill you first” he said, then moved the gun from Hollie to Mark and was about to pull the trigger when a shot rang out.

Jo ran blindly along the dark street.  Not really sure where she was going, only that she wasn’t going back to where she’d come from.  She still couldn’t believe King had killed his partner and had intended killing her and blaming it on Ingebrigtsen.  She wiped away tears on recalling how the young man had saved her life.

A car pulled up in front of her and out he jumped, Anderson.  “Get in Bitch!” he hissed, she immediately turned and tore off in the opposite direction.  He followed, gaining on her with each step.  Suddenly she felt herself being thrown to the ground.  “What the hell are you doing?” she yelled, he drew in a deep breath and pulled her to her feet. “Let her go, let her go!  We don’t need her” Shelby cried out in panic, Jo stared at her, she was scared of him.  “Get back in the fucking car” she was firmly told.

“It was you, it was you all along” Jo accused.

“Shut up”

“You’ll never get away with this; Adams will come and find you”

Adams couldn’t find his own tail”

“I wouldn’t be too sure of that!” Jo said smugly.

“Sure”

Jo opened her mouth to say something else but Anderson merely bundled her into the trunk of his car then sped off into the night.

King let the gun drop to the ground, his left hand clutching his right wrist.  Blood oozed out and dropped onto the dusty road. “You shot me!” he whimpered, Mark opened one eye, his heart racing as Hollie placed a hand on his arm, “Are you okay?” she asked as Adams dealt with King.

“Yeah, I think so” Mark replied, as he felt himself go cold, Hollie caught hold of him, “Your not, come and sit down” she added, he nodded, allowing himself to be led over to her car.

As soon as Adams had dealt with King’s superficial wound and made sure Christian was being taken care of he came to talk to Mark and Hollie.  “How’re you guys doing?” he said as he crouched down, Hollie stared at him.  “We’re fine, Adams King killed Lloyd and he was gonna kill us” Hollie told him tearfully,.

“Yeah, I figured that’s what happened”

“I’m not sure what happened to Jo”

Adams had already gotten the story from Christian.

“I want the paramedics to have a look at you two” Adams told them, but they refused and insisted that they were both fine.

“I just wanna know where my sister is” sobbed Hollie

“So do I Miss Logan, so do I”

Adams approached his partner, a frown on his face.  The older man had been instructing everyone on what they were to do.

“Sir, we got nothing on Logan’s whereabouts yet”

“Tell them to keep trying, they ain’t fucking coming in until they find her” said Adams firmly.

“Keep looking” Welsh said

“I’ll finish up here, I want you to go to the hospital and question Ingebrigtsen.”

“I thought you did that already?”

Adams nodded, “Yeah but he was a bit groggy and not making too much sense.”

Welsh sighed then made his way to his car, “Hey Adams, she’ll be okay” he said quietly.

“She better be” Adams muttered solemnly as he watched Welsh go.
