Christian glanced at the tall dark haired middle-aged man then sighed, he looked as if he’d just stepped from the set of some old Colombo Movie; same shabby looking raincoat.  They’d gotten him a brief at last, he sat in the room watching the man open his case and fumble about inside. “So, when can I get outa here?” he inquired, the man pushed his silver framed glasses onto his face then sighed. “I’m not sure” Christian stared at him “You’re not sure?”

“No, cops have a few more questions”

“What?  I already answered all their damn questions”

“Yeah?  Well they got more”

Christian rolled his eyes then sat back on the wooden chair, his arms folded across his chest. Foot tapping lightly on the floor as he waited to be interrogated once more.

Minutes later the two detectives entered the room, a smug look on both their faces.  Christian stared up to where they stood trying to read their expressions but they gave very little away.

“Hello I’m detective Crane this is Detective Maloney and you are?”

Christian glanced up to where the tall skinny Detective Crane stood; the smug look still spread all over his face.

“I’m Eric Lennon defence attorney” Crane shook Lennon’s hand then sat down facing him, leaving Maloney to sit down opposite Christian.

“Well now Ingebrigtsen…tell me” Officer Crane began “Have you seen these before?”

Christian lent forward in his seat, of course he had seen them, they were his clothes the ones he had been wearing the night of the party, but why were they covered in blood and why the hell was Crane holding them?

“Well?” the man impatiently added, Christian felt himself go cold

“Yes, yes there’s mine but…” he tried to explain

“And this?”

Christian glanced at the 38 calibre revolver then darted a look at his attorney.

“It’s mine”

The man took a deep breath then stood up “Christian Ingebrigtsen I’m arresting you for the murder of one Larry Anderson you don’t have to say anything but if you do so it will be written down and used in evidence against you”

Christian begun to protest his innocence but was charged with first degree murder none the less and promptly escorted back to his cell and thrown inside.

As soon as the door swung closed he got up from the floor and placed both hands on the bars, this was a nightmare. He’d done nothing wrong, he hadn’t murdered anyone of that he was pretty sure. But what of the blood stained clothes and how the hell did they manage to get his gun, he always kept it under lock and key “You okay buddy?” he heard a voice behind him, “What the hell do you think?” the guy jumped down from the top bunk and came to stand next to him. “First time huh?” Christian looked askance “So what they bust you for?” the African/American inquired

“Murder”

“Wow…that’s bad man”

“Yeah?” said Christian as he turned and rested his back on the bars and stared at the man, he wasn’t much younger than himself “Tell me about it?” he added with a sigh

The young man pouted, “All you need is a good brief and you’re laughing” he suggested.

“Laughing?  I’m far from fucking laughing”

“Sorry”

“This is a fucking nightmare!”

“So what they say you done?”

“Shot someone”

“And did you?”

“Nope”

“Wow is it that Anderson block the ex cop?”

Christian sat down on the bottom bunk and rested his head in his hands. “Yeah that’s him…if a man ever needed to die he did but I didn’t kill him”

“No?”

“No!”

“Well all you gotta do is tell the truth”

“Yeah?  Who the fuck’s gonna believe me?”

“Hey that’s what the jury’s for bud!”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah”

That afternoon, after further questioning he finally got to make a call and called Kate. “Hey babe it’s me” he said in a quiet tone of voice, there was a pause, “Kate?” he added anxiously. “I’m here, oh god Chris are you okay?” he could hear the tears in her voice.  “No not really” he admitted as he rested his head against the brick wall, cops listening everywhere “Listen Kate, Jessie she’s okay huh?” it broke his heart to even think of his daughter, “She’s good, Shelby’s taken real good care of her Chris” he rested the black receiver against his forehead as his thoughts returned to Shelby. “Oh God Shelb…how’s she doing?” he tried hard not to sob “Good she said she’ll come see you soon” Kate said positively “Okay” he replied as a hand tapped his shoulder “Time!”

“I gotta go…I’ll talk to you soon babe”

“Okay Bye”

“Bye” he said his voice almost a whisper as she rang off.

Lennon came to see him a frown on his face.” So?  What’s so urgent?” Christian hissed, the man drew in a deep breath “I managed to get bale” Christian’s eyes widened “What?  No kidding?”  The man nodded as he took his arm and lead him along the corridor, “Yeah they set it at 1 million dollars” Christian stopped walking “Oh gees Lennon I’ll go to my bank right away.” he said caustically, the man frowned “Your Mom raised bale she put her house up as a bond so don’t be going anywhere” he nodded “So when the hell can I get outa this shit-hole?” the man glanced at his watch “Give me a few days to get things moving okay?” Christian frowned “Okay” he replied brightly.

A few days later Christian walked from the police precinct taking in the fresh air, a car horn tooted and he looked across to find Shelby behind the wheel of his car. “Hey babe need a ride?” she asked with a smile “Sure” he replied walking across to meet her.  They kissed before Christian got into the passenger seat “Mmm you need a shave” she told him as she fingered his jaw, he glanced at himself in the mirror “I need a shower” he laughed as she sped off.

Christian suddenly realised his daughter’s absence, he glanced at the empty child seat then glanced at Shelby. “Where’s Jessie?” she side glanced him then continued driving. “Kate’s taking care of her, I thought we could go for a drive?” he rested his head on the seat. “I’d rather go home and see Jessie” he said tiredly, Shelby nodded “Sure hon if that’s what you wanna do”

“Yeah…sorry”

“Hey no sweat…I just thought you’d want a bit of fresh air’s all”

“It was a nice thought babe”

They travelled on, Shelby taking the long way home past the ocean front. “Chris that’s where they found your step father” Christian stared at her then glanced over the cliff. “What?  You mean he’s really dead?”

“Yeah babe…he’s really gone”

“I can’t say I ain’t too broken hearted Shelb…I’ve gone to hell and back with him”

“They found his truck burnt out at the bottom of the cliff and his body riddled with bullets”

“I don’t wanna hear the details Shelb…please change the subject?”

“Sure I’ll take you home”

“Thanks”

The house was warn and welcoming, Christian immediately took his daughter from Kate and walked inside the house leaving the two women to talk. “God I’ve missed you so much honey” he confessed as he sat down on the sofa and kissed her over and over again “I’ll fix you something to eat” Shelby told him as she past on her way to the kitchen.

Christian let Jessica go play then went to shower and change but his thoughts were constantly on Larry Anderson, the brute was dead!  There was many times he had prayed at night that he’d have a heart attack or a car crash, but no that never happened, he’d always wake up next day to find him standing over him with the same evil look on his face, he should be happy, he’d always said that the happiest day of his life would be the day this man died, yet here he was miserable and facing the rest of his life in jail.

He took a deep breath then sat down on his bed, his mind awash with questions, questions that he couldn’t answer.  His back really was up against the wall, all the evidence pointed to him but he didn’t’ kill him, he was sure he didn’t, if only things weren’t such a blur “Chris” he heard Shelby say “Yeah?” he called back “Come get something to eat” he didn’t really feel like eating “Okay” he replied as he got up from the bed.

That evening he sat on the porch letting the sun hit his face, he wondered just how many nights like this he’d have left, the ocean looked to be a deeper blue than usual which somewhat reflected his mood. “Daddy” he heard Jessica say, he turned and smiled “Hey sweetie” he opened his arms and smiled again when she rushed in she felt so warm. “She came to say good night” Shelby said in a low tone. “Leave her I’ll put her to bed when she falls asleep” Shelby nodded then retreated back inside leaving him with his daughter.

Kate watched them from her window a tear rolling down her tanned cheek, she knew he didn’t kill Larry Anderson, her gut instinct told her he didn’t, he’d thought about it many times had even discussed how he’d do it, but would never go through with it.

The sun was fading and a chill had filled the night air, Christian looked down on his sleeping child, she was now wrapped in a blanket. “I love you so much darling” he whispered. “You have a good life” he added as he kissed her forehead. “Chris” he looked up to find Kate staring at him. “Surely they wont find you guilty?” he averted his gaze, “Kate the odds are stacked against me” she pouted “But surely the jury will believe you?” he shrugged “Why?  Because I say I didn’t kill him?” she nodded “Kate, I’m going to jail!” he stated matter of fact “No!” she disbelieved. “Yes” he added as he watched her walk slowly back inside her home.
