Shelby had gone. Christian had heard the spray of the shower earlier that morning and assumed she had an early start. She usually had to open the café at 6.30am Jessica was lying in bed next to him her arm stretched across his chest as she slept. She was going through a stage where she just wouldn’t stay in her own bed and would climb in between him and Shelby, he loved to lie and watch her sleep so peaceful, he smiled contentedly as he rested his head against his hand and just watched her little tummy slowly rise and fall with each breath he couldn’t believe how much he could love someone. She’d touched his heart the minute he saw her and fell in love the minute she was placed in his arms.

The second she begun to stir he placed a finger on the palm of her hand and gently rubbed it, her eyes flickered open then closed once again as he soothed her back to sleep, satisfied that she was indeed in a deep sleep he pulled the covers from his body and stepped out of bed bending down he lifted the sleeping child into his loving arms and carried her through to bed “Shhhhhhh” he soothed as he kissed her cheek then placed her carefully into bed “Night sweetheart” he whispered as he smoothed back the blond hair then quietly left the room.

After showering he dressed pulling on a pair of jeans and black t-shirt, it was a lovely warm day and he planned to take Jessica to the zoo as he had taken the day off work.

Kate was sitting on the porch of her beach house when she caught sight of Christian, a smile on her pretty face “Hey you okay?” she inquired he lent against the post “Sure…why wouldn’t I be?” she shrugged her slender shoulders then pouted up in his direction “I just thought with Larry coming back in all?” Christian caught his breath “Oh that…well I don’t expect I’ll be seeing him again” Kate’s blue eyes widened “Oh…what makes you so sure?” he smiled “It’s just a gut feeling I got” Kate smiled warmly at him, they went back a long way both brought up in the same neighbourhood “Good…I’m glad” she said quietly, he stared at her then sighed “So what you got planned for today?” she shrugged her bear shoulders

“Not much why?”

“I’m taking Jessie to the zoo…you wanna come?”

“Sure why not…just let me slip into something a little more comfortable”

Christian grinned “Why? You look hot to me”

She felt her cheeks burn “Chris I can’t possibly go to the zoo looking like this!”

“Why? You look great”

She glanced down at the tiny white shorts and pink halter-neck top then sighed “Are you sure I look okay?” he nodded surely as he watched her slip into white sneakers.

“Okay if you say so…I’ll just go and freshen up though” he nodded then told her he still had to get Jessica ready.

They left bound for the local Zoo about half an hour later, Christian behind the wheel, it felt so good to be with Kate, it was like some kind of family outing. Kate sitting next to him and Jessica playing with a toy in the back, anyone who didn’t know them would have been forgiven in thinking that they were the perfect family. It wasn’t the first time Kate had been mistaken for Jessica’s mother and Christian’s wife they did act like a married couple “Daddy zoo?” Jessica said in the back, Christian smiled into the rear view mirror as he reached for his sunglasses and quickly slipped them on. It was then he noticed them. Officers King and Lloyd sitting at the lights in their patrol car “That little punks days are numbered” he heard King say in a hostile tone of voice as he sped off “What the hell does he mean by that?” asked Kate looking alarmed Christian side glanced her “Don’t pay the jerk no attention…he’s got it in for me that’s all” Kate turned right round on her seat “They’re following us” she said “Yeah?” she nodded as she watched Christian press the accelerator further to the floor “Chris don’t! Jessie’s in the car remember!” he eyed his daughter and immediately slowed “Wow…I almost forgot” he said guiltily as Kate glanced at Jessica who was playing with her doll. “I doubt whether I’d have been able to out run those morons anyway” Kate rolled her eyes “Christian! You ain’t seventeen no more” she reminded him “You always were a complete jerk sometimes” he smiled on recalling the time they hot wired a car and begun cruising around town in it, Kate was Rob’s girlfriend at the time and he was dating Georgia “I know what you’re thinking” laughed Kate Christian side glanced her “Oh? What?” she simpered knowingly “You’re thinking about that time when you hot wired your uncle Frank’s car” he sniggered “Yeah well I weren’t to know the son of a bitch had gotten a new goddamn car” Frank Anderson had gone crazy and chased them all over town in his squad car until Christian had finally lost control of the car and ended up in a ditch “Those were the days” laughed Kate happily

“Yeah”

“Your Uncle Frank’s face…now that really were a picture”

“Yeah it were weren’t it…he were gonna throttle the life outa me”

Kate frowned “Yeah me and Georgia had to sweet talk him into letting us go”

“Yeah at least you didn’t get into too much trouble over it”

“No…unlike you”

“Yeah well…what was new then?”

“I know but you’re back was in some state though”

Christian bowed his head he didn’t like talking about his past one bit. “Hell it’s over now…He’ll never touch me again” he vowed as he signalled to turn off the highway.

King and Lloyd followed him practically to the zoo entrance before being called away to deal with an incident downtown, “Well praise the lord” Christian suddenly said on seeing them turn off just before they reached the zoo. “They gone?” asked Kate he nodded as he pulled into the parking lot then got out “Zoo” Jessica said as she was placed into her stroller, Kate immediately assuming the role of mom and pushed her towards the entrance.

The afternoon was spent walking around the massive grounds, Kate taking pictures while Christian carried his daughter around and showed her all the animals. “Look” he said excitedly as he pointed each one out “That’s an elephant” he said then smiled when she tried to repeat the name “Ephalant” she replied as she pointed at it.

They headed back just shortly after four, Jessica asleep in the back of the car the little pink elephant clutched in her hands as she slept. “I really enjoyed myself today Chris…I’m glad I came now” he side glanced her as he entered the freeway pressing down on the accelerator. “I think she had a good time huh?” Kate glanced at the sleeping little form then nodded “Yep I think she had a swell time” she agreed as they journeyed on unbeknown to them trouble awaited them as soon as they reached home.

An array of police cars swooped down on them as soon as he turned into his street. “What the fuck?” Christian mouthed as he slowed his car to a halt, his heart racing.

“What the hell do they want Chris?” Kate cried fearfully.

“I haven’t a fucking clue”

Officers Lloyd and King got out of the patrol car guns pointed straight at them. “Chris what have you done?” Kate yelled out in fright, “I ain’t done nothing” he replied looking equally fearful, “Step out of the car and put your hands on your head!” they were both told “What?” said Kate tearfully, Christian drew in a deep breath “Better do as the jerk says” he advised as he slowly got out of his car, Kate opened the door and apprehensively stepped out. “Step away from the car Missy” said Officer Lloyd, his tone softer, Kate stared across to where Christian now stood. “We’ve got a baby in here for god sake!” she shrieked on seeing cops close in, their guns still raised, “Okay Missy…just stay where you are” she eyed the young officer wearily, “Please she’s just a baby” she urged them to be careful. “She’ll be absolutely fine ma’am” said Officer Lloyd as Officer King seized hold of Christian and violently threw him to the ground. “What the hell are you doing?” Kate yelled out in panic; as she witnessed three cops restrain her friend while the other fought to get the handcuffs on him. “King we got a minor here” said Lloyd anxiously “Call in welfare have them come down the precinct” Christian now handcuffed tried to get to his hysterical child “Noooo you can’t take her into care!” he yelled “Kate please take care of my daughter” he pleaded as he was hauled away.

Kate quickly lifted the hysterical child from the car and held her close. Hot little tears falling on her neck as she sobbed heartily. “Shhhhhhh its okay sweetie” she whispered as she shushed her “God what the hell do I do now?” she said aloud “Kate…Kate I saw what happened are you okay?” asked her best friend.

“Yes! No not really”

The beautiful young woman placed an arm around her shoulder leading her away from the scene and into her home, which were just a few yards away.

Once calm enough Kate tried to think straight, why had they just taken Chris like that? As far as she was aware they didn’t even have a warrant or anything, “Here drink this” Diana said as she handed her a glass of brandy “I don’t…” Kate begun to protest, “Go on it’ll calm your nerves” Diana told her then attended to Jessica, “I just don’t understand what they want with Chris” said Kate solemnly, Diana stared at her “There’s talk going around town” she began

“Yeah about that bastard Larry disappearing”

Diana shook her head “No they found a body and think it’s his”

“What Larry’s? Are they sure?”

Diana shrugged “I don’t know but they must have a fair idea”

“But what’s that got to do with Chris?”

“Oh Kate…wake up and smell the coffee…I was there remember…I heard him threaten the guy with my own ears”

“But that doesn’t make him a murderer!”

“True but I have serious doubts”

“What? Are you nuts? Diana Chris ain’t no murderer!”

“That’s your opinion…I believe with Larry Chris is capable of anything”

Kate stood up and seized Jessica “Well if that’s what you believe then there really ain’t much to say is there?”

Diana watched as her best friend stormed off slamming the door behind her.

Christian eyed the guy who’d been brought in after him then let out a deep sigh, he looked like a criminal. Dressed in faded denim jeans and black t-shirt over which he wore a sleeveless denim jacket frayed at the shoulders a small hoop earring in his left ear his dark hair was streaked blond on top “You!” someone hissed in the distance making both young men turn to face the voice. “Sit down there and don’t fucking move” the tanned skinned man was firmly told.

He smiled broadly as he sat down on the seat next to Christian, seemingly un-phased by the whole scene “You okay bud?” he asked politely, Christian pouted “Who the fuck gave you permission to talk?” yelled King his eyes fixed firmly on the smaller man. “Who the fuck gave you permission to live?” he retorted, “Don’t even go there Marazzi you’re going down this time you little shit-head”, Marazzi merely smirked “Is that right officer King?” he stated as the man closed in, “Yeah you bet your bottom dollar that’s right…I’ll see you in jail this time you little punk”. The younger man sniggered “Oh puleeze is that the best you can do?” Lloyd placed a hand on his partners shoulder, “King cool it huh…you know what the little s.o.b’s like”, Christian glanced from the officers to the man seated next to him “Just you watch it” said King at last before being dragged away.

The young man let out a deep sigh then smiled, “So what you do then?” he asked boldly,

Christian shrugged “They said I murdered some bastard” the young man stared wide-eyed,

“And did you?” he inquired Christian shook his head, “No! I didn’t” the man sighed “Ouch! That’s bad man” he sympathised, “Yeah tell me about it” Christian replied anxiously, “So…what you in here for?” he asked, “They said I robbed a grocery store” Christian stared at him, “And did you?” he said quietly “What do you think?” Christian smiled; he liked this guy right off. “The name’s Paul by the way but everyone calls me Maz” Christian smiled back at him “I’m Chris” he introduced himself “I’d shake your hand but…” Christian glanced at the cuffs “Yeah same here” he replied as officers King and Lloyd approached “Right you on your feet” Christian was ordered and slowly he obeyed “Might see you around bud” he heard Maz say in a low tone “Doubt it I’ll be outa here soon” he replied as he was lead away….
