Chapter 43
“Good sleep?” he asked as she sleepily came into the lounge.
Christian was sat on one of the sofas, his sock clad feet resting casually on the coffee table. He was lounging right back in the seat, watching morning TV with a bowl of cereal balanced on his chest.
“Yeah, was lovely.”
“You want some breakfast?”
He immediately got up and showed her where the breakfast things were kept. It ever so slightly resembled being in a hotel, he had a choice of around 10 cereals and enough different flavoured juices to set up his own shop.
“What time did you get up?” she asked.
“About an hour or so ago, I always end up getting up early, find it hard to lay in after all those early mornings with a1.”
“You doing anything with the band today?”
“No,” he replied, glancing down at his breakfast and taking a big munch.
“What you up to then?”
“Not a lot,” he said casually, his eyes fixed intently on the screen.
“Sounds interesting,” she said, looking at him suspiciously, “you can tell me you know, I’m not your keeper, I’m not going to mind.”
“No, you’ll just think I’m mad.”
“Try me”
“I’m going to see Ella,” he confessed, “I’m going crazy and I can’t stop thinking about her.”
“You just going to turn up?”
“Yep, it’s the only thing I can think of doing.”
“Oh”
“What are you going to do?” he asked.
“Mark’s coming round for a coffee,” she replied, completely distracted by thoughts of Ella.
“That’ll be nice, Mark really likes you,” he winked at her.
Mel wrinkled up her nose slightly, was Christian trying to set her up with his mate? Well it wasn’t going to work, whatever happened things were going to go her way and no one elses.
When Christian left an hour later, Mel couldn’t resist but get up and gently turn round the photo of Ella so it was facing the wall. There that was better, now she wouldn’t be forced to look at her all day.
“Was that done on purpose?” Mark asked immediately when he entered the room a few moments later.
“What?”
“The photo of Ella,” he nodded towards the mantelpiece.
Mel just shrugged in response and slumped herself down on the couch.
“How’s things going?” he asked as he sat down right next to her.
“Good,” she smiled at him, “we’re really making a connection.”
Mark’s eyes rolled upwards, “That’s not what this is all about really.”
“It’s going to happen Mark.”
“I didn’t help fix all this up so you could meddle around in his love life,” Mark argued back, “taking on responsibility for his actions is one thing, but he’s never going to love you Mel.”
“He is.”
“And what makes you so sure?”
“We’re soul mates.”
Mark let out a loud puff of air from his mouth, he was getting so bored of having these same conversations with Mel over and over again, no matter what he said to her she just wouldn’t listen to him.
“How do you know that?” he asked.
“I can feel it,” Mel explained, “the first time I ever saw him I knew it, we are soul mates.”
“And how does he feel about this?” Mark asked sarcastically.
“He will realise it,” Mel said matter of factly, “we are soul mates and its meant to be, it has to happen in the end cos we are meant to be together.”
“OK,” Mark started, “but what happens when someone else out there thinks that you are their soul mate?”
“What do you mean?” she turned to him in puzzlement.
“Well, if someone else feels strongly about you then doesn’t that mean that you will end up with him – you can’t be with both people.”
“Don’t understand,” she replied.
“Some guy out there might really really want you, possibly even believe that you are his soul mate, so how do you know you aren’t supposed to be with him?”
“Who are you talking about?” Mel asked suspiciously.
“No one,” Mark replied, realising that Mel hadn’t got a clue what he was talking about and so wanting to drop the subject as quickly as possible.
Mel stood up and walked towards the fireplace, she wasn’t really interested in Mark’s nonsense – sometimes he just spoke too much, it was especially annoying when she really felt like some peace and quiet.
“Do you think she’s pretty?” she suddenly asked Mark, spinning round to face him.
“What?” Mark replied, not understanding where on earth that question had come from, or what it was supposed to mean.
“As a man, do you find her attractive?”
“Who?”
“Ella.”
Mark slapped his fist down on the coffee table in frustration, “Mel this has to stop, it’s becoming an obsession.”
“Thanks for the support.” Mel snapped back.
“All we ever do is talk about her and Chris,” Mark said, “and then all we ever do is argue about it.”
“We wouldn’t argue if you were a true friend to me,” Mel grumbled back.
“What happened to the old Mel?”
“What old Mel?”
“The one I walked with that day.”
Mel looked at him blankly for a moment.
“Don’t you remember the day when I decided not to get in the car and we walked to the TV recording?”
Suddenly it clicked, he was talking about Pepsi.
“Oh that,” Mel said off handly.
“You were lovely that day,” Mark continued, “it was the first time that I really realised it.”
“Realised what?” She asked, Mark really wasn’t making any sense at all today, he was beginning to make her head hurt.
“Erm ….” He paused to think for a moment, “what a lovely person you are.”
“That’s sweet,” Mel said, “do you think that Chris can see that too?”
He’d had enough.
Standing up quickly, Mark stormed out of the flat.
