Chapter 46
“I am sorry,” he insisted for the tenth time that day.
“I am,” he repeated again, standing beside her and speaking directly down her ear.
Mel continued to ignore him, hoping that in a moment he may get bored and go and annoy someone else instead. She had managed to avoid him most of the day, and it was only now that she had her hands in the washing up that he had managed to corner her.
“Mel, did you hear me?”
She wasn’t going to listen to him, she refused to! Nothing he could say would make last night any better, he had said what he had said and he had meant it. She had been awake for hours that night, wondering where this left them, it had hurt her so much when he had said that, she had even considered packing her bags and leaving, but the second it had entered her head it had left again, thinking of a future life without Christian hurt far more than anything he said the night before.
“Why wont you hear me out?” he said in exasperation.
“Nothing you can say will make it any better,” she grunted in response, washing up at super speed and throwing the dishes onto the draining board in anger.
“I am sorry”
“So you keep saying.”
“But I am,” he insisted in a little whiney voice, “I hate to think that I upset you.”
“Should have thought about that before you spoke.”
“I know,” he replied in a small voice.
“It was an awful thing to say”
“I didn’t mean it.”
“You must have done,” she protested, “and in years to come you’ll be telling our child that Mummy is some slapper that just wanted to get off with a popstar.”
“Now you’re putting words in my mouth.”
“It’s what you thought”
“I know that’s not you Mel,” he said, “please believe me.”
She turned her head slightly towards him, “you need to understand how much you hurt me last night Chris, you made me feel cheap and dirty.”
He hung his head in shame and started glowing red.
“You made it sound like I slept with you cos you’re famous, and it wasn’t like that at all, I didn’t plan it, it’s just something that happened.”
“I know,” he said shamefully, “I always knew that, I don’t know why I said those things.”
“Neither do I,” she turned back towards the sink and began to quickly wash the remaining dishes.
“Don’t you forgive me?”
“I don’t forgive and forget that easily.”
“Please forgive me,” he sidled up closer to her and wrapped his arms around her so that his hands met across her stomach. He was so close that when he breathed she could feel his chest move up and down on her back. It was wonderful. She looked down at his hands, they were clasped around her, making her feel all warm and safe. Yes, this is what she wanted and needed, of course she would forgive him.
“I forgive you,” she whispered quietly at him.
He spun her round to face him and gave her a gentle hug.
“Thank you, I’ll make it up to you.”
“Sounds interesting,” she commented.
He pulled out of her grasp and picked up a tea towel.
“Let’s go out on the town.”
Now that wasn’t something she had exactly been expecting – she would much have preferred to go out for a nice quiet meal, but if this was what he wanted, so be it.
She nodded her head in agreement, “nothing too mad though, remember I’m pregnant.”
He grinned at her, “we’ll just go to The Met, there’s a quiet VIP bit in there,”
“Wow, VIP!” she grinned, “what am I going to wear?”
“Typical girl,” he rolled his eyes at her.
“I don’t think I’ve got anything appropriate.”
“You could wear an old apron and you’d still look gorgeous,” he commented.
She flushed in pleasure, part of her telling her that this was just Christian knowing what to say to a lady, but the other half wanting so much to read more into it.
“I’ll go ring the others, see if they’re up for a night out”
She beamed at him in happiness, all of the worries from last night had vanished, she was going to the Met Bar! Little old nobody Mel, was going to the Met Bar! It was so hard to believe.
Launching herself into a little skip she ran up the stairs, taking them two at a time, and almost tripping over in her haste. Running over to the little wardrobe in her room, she threw open the doors and stood back to get the full effect of its contents.
On first glance nothing seemed right, everything was too casual, and the only nice tops she had she had worn recently.
Sighing she moved towards the clothes and began to run her hands across the material, hoping her hand would hit something right.
“You found anything?” he appeared behind her in the door.
“No, it’s all too boring,” she complained.
She continued to look, taking various clothes out and examining them before throwing them on the bed.
“You get in touch with the others?” she asked
“Yep, we’re meeting them in an hour.”
Her face fell, “an hour! What were you thinking?”
“What?” his face looked blank in confusion.
“No girl can get ready in an hour, I don’t even know what to put on.”
He laughed to himself and muttered something rude about stupid females before joining her in the door of the wardrobe. He began to help her, looking through all the clothes before eventually selecting a black dress.
“It’s a bit simple,” she said, examining the little dress.
“Well accessorise,” he prompted and pulled a pair of pink sparkly sandals from the bottom of the drawer and then moved across to the dresser to look through her jewellery box.
“You’re amazing you know that?” she said as she watched him with a smile.
“Thanks, why you say that?”
“Well, not many guys would go to this much effort to help.”
He smiled and then beckoned her over to the dressing table and made her sit down in front of the mirror. Standing behind her he began to pick up various necklaces, putting them briefly round her neck, examining her reflection and then going back to find a different one.
“You’re so good at this,” Mel said in amazement as she watched him expertly leaf through her box.
“Don’t tell anyone,” he chuckled, “they’d all tease me for not being a man or something.”
She laughed with him; it was so funny how guys were always so concerned about what their mates thought of them.
“I think I have the one,” he smiled at her in the glass and put a thin silver chain around her neck.
Bending down closer to her face he leaned in towards the mirror to have a better look. She had to admit it did look perfect, and he seemed so happy with his choice, he was beaming at her reflection, and she couldn’t help but grin back. He returned to the back of her neck, fiddling with the clasp to make it a tiny bit longer.
Leaning his head on her shoulder he wrapped his arms around her waist and smiled at her.
“You look beautiful”
She smiled at him, there was nothing in the world that pleased her more than hearing Christian complement her.
He nuzzled his face into her neck slightly and then she felt his lips land gently on her collarbone, kissing her gently whilst his hand carefully stroked her hair.
It felt so amazing; she held her breath, never wanting it to end.
But it did.
He looked up and their eyes met in the mirror.
