Ben
had phoned Paul from the plane, using his credit card in the plane phone, about
half an hour before the plane landed. He’d had to wake Sammie up as well, to
make sure she got off. They walked through customs together, as close together
as possible. As soon as they had got through immigration they heard cheers-some
of Ben’s fans had shown up and were cheering for him.
“Oh man!” he
muttered “Sammie, go through first and find Paul, I’ll sign a few autographs
and come after you okay? Don’t wait for me or look back though, those girls can
get a little . . . possessive” He hugged her and pushed her forward with all
the luggage. The fans were ignoring her, and letting her walk through with the
rest of the people from the plane. She desperately wanted to turn back and make
sure Ben was okay, but he had made her promise not to. After ploughing through
the mass of girls who were moving in the opposite direction, louder than before
(Ben must have shown his face), Sammie looked around. She couldn’t see Paul
anywhere, and she couldn’t be sure that Kaz would be with him. She pushed the
luggage trolley slower than before, looking around carefully. Finally, a voice
behind her grabbed her attention, a voice she recognised.
“Hey,
hey, wait, are you Sammie?” The familiar guy’s voice asked. She turned. Paul
was standing, looking awkward, a baseball cap pulled low down his face. Why
hadn’t Ben tried that?
“Yeah,
sorry. Did I walk past you?”
Paul shook his head.
“Nah,
we were in the shop” he pointed to a newsagents “and I realised your flight was
here . . . where’s Ben?”
Sammie pointed to the mass of
girls. Then she realised what he’d said.
“We?”
Paul nodded, smiling. At that
moment, Kaz came running up, and hugged Sammie before slipping her arm around
Paul’s waist. He kissed her quickly on the cheek.
“So
how long d’ya think Ben’ll take?” he asked, trying to make conversation.
“I
dunno, how long does her usually take?”
“Forever,
but he’s not usually as smitten as he is with you so I doubt it’ll be much
longer. Want a drink?” he held out a bottle of coke, obviously bought from the
airport shop. Sammie took it, thanking him. She exchanged a look with Kaz, who
was smiling.
“Did you have a good time with Ben then?” Kaz finally asked.
“Yeah,
it’s been great”
“Well,
wait until we have Ben and we’re back at his place to talk about it” Paul cut
in, looking around for his former band mate.
“Yeah, Paul’s right . . . and he’s told me everything Ben’s said
about you” Kaz added, winking. Sammie blushed, and then joined Paul, looking
out for Ben. Eventually he caught up with them, the fans shooting evil looks at
Sammie and Kaz.
“C’mon,
let’s go” Ben said hurriedly, standing behind Sammie and pushing the luggage
trolley, forcing Sammie along with him. Paul and Kaz gave each other a confused
look, and followed, trying to catch up with Ben before he realised he had no
idea where the car was parked.
“Ben, why are we rushing?” Sammie whispered.
“Those fans know you’re my girlfriend, and they know the hotel we’re
supposed to be staying in. I don’t want you around them, just in case”
“I
thought you had nice fans”
“We
do, but . . . maybe you’ll understand later”
“Understand
what?”
They finally reached Paul’s
car, loaded it, and climbed in, Paul and Kaz in the front (Paul driving), Ben
and Sammie in the back.
“Ben,
let me understand now” Sammie pressed.
“Look,
we have a few . . . psycho fans, and they were in the crowd of nicer fans”
“Hey Ben”
Paul added “Was your stalker there?”
“Paul,
that’s not funny!” Ben looked at Sammie, who was staring back. He knew he had
to elaborate. “I did have a stalker, but she’s gone, she went a while ago”
Sammie
stared at the back of Paul’s head, ignoring the squeeze of Ben’s hand on hers
and his attempts of a hug.
“Sammie, are you
okay? I know the stalker thing comes as a bit of a shock. Please don’t end it
because of her, too many people do that to me, I-”
He
faded when he realised Sammie wasn’t going to respond. He looked helplessly at
Paul, who couldn’t respond as his eyes were on the road. Kaz turned in her seat
and looked at Sammie.
“Is this the first
you knew about her?”
Sammie managed a small nod.
“Chris
told me . . . Monday I think. Don’t worry” she twisted around to look at Ben.
“Why didn’t you tell her before?”
“I
didn’t think she needed to know or want to know . . . look, Sammie, it’ll be
okay. I told you before that I’d keep you safe from every idiot and I’m going
to, okay?”
Sammie managed another small
nod.
“Ben,
I always forget, is it road or court?” Paul interrupted.
“Road”
“Oops”
“Turn
around, go right, then left into-”
“The
car park” Paul joined in with Ben. He smiled cheekily.
“At
least you remember something”
“I
remembered most of your address, it’s the road bit that throws me”
“Paul,
you’re turning into Mark!”
Paul parked the car. He turned
to face Ben.
“If I
turn into Mark, Kaz’ll go off me. I’ll recite road from now on and forget the
rest of it”
They both laughed. Kaz smiled,
but Sammie remained straight-faced. Ben sighed.
“Sammie,
please forgive me, okay? I just wanted to protect you from her”
Sammie finally turned back to
look at him.
“I’m
still trying to take it in. I’ll be okay. Let’s go in, yeah?”
Ben nodded, and they all got
out. Ben and Paul insisted on carrying the suitcases and bags. Kaz and Sammie
fell behind them, whispering.
“Sammie,
are you sure you’re okay? It was a bit cruel of Paul to bring it up”
“Well,
he didn’t know that I don’t know, so it wasn’t really I guess. I’m okay, I’m a
bit freaked out by it though. Ben seems so calm about it”
“He’s
used to it, and like he said, she’s gone. Backed off completely”
“How
do you know all this?”
Kaz shrugged.
“Chris
and I talked a lot,”
She sounded awfully sad.
“Kaz,
do you miss Chris?”
“He
was a good friend, I’m really upset that he won’t still talk to me. I know we
weren’t together very long at all but I miss him, yeah”
Sammie stopped and hugged her
tightly.
“Don’t
take it the wrong way, I love being with Paul and he actually wants me back,
but I still want Christian back as a mate”
“Then
you’ll get that”
“What?
. . . What are you planning? . . . Or you and Ben”
“You’ll
see”
“Samantha!”
“Not
working!”
“Please,
tell me”
“Not
gonna”
“Sammiekins?”
“Definitely
not now! And you’ll find out anyway!” They got inside Ben’s flat finally.
“Find
out what?” Paul asked.
“Oh,
not you too!” Sammie exclaimed.
“Sammie
and Ben are up to something”
Ben came in the room.
“I
don’t think you want to know what me and Sammie are up to,” he said cheekily,
winking at Paul and Kaz, and grabbing Sammie to pull her close, kissing her
gently. After a few short pecks they pulled away slightly, wrapping their arms
around each other, then looked at Kaz and Paul who were standing around
awkwardly. Ben rested his head on Sammie’s.
Are you two okay? He asked.
They nodded. “Want a drink?” They nodded again. Ben dragged Sammie into the
kitchen.
“Oops,
forgot to ask them what they wanted” Ben said, laughing. He ran back to Kaz and
Paul. Sammie looked around the tiny kitchen while he was gone. He came back in,
switched on the kettle and hoisted Sammie onto the work surface, kissing her.
She cupped his face with her hands and kissed him back. The kettle switched
itself off, and Ben pulled away.
“Gotta
do Paul’s coffee” he sighed, and pulled open various cupboard, looking for
coffee, cups and sugar. “Babe, could you get the milk and the coke out of the
fridge please?”
“Wouldn’t
the milk’ve gone off by now?”
“Dammit”
he called out, “Paul, is black coffee alright with ya?” There was no answer.
“Oi, Paul, put her down and answer me, the milk’s dodgy”
“Yeah,
fine” they heard Paul call back. Ben and Sammie laughed.
“Hmm,
that either means black coffee’s fine or dodgy milk’s fine” Ben said. “Could
you do the coke while I look for that powder milk crap?” Sammie nodded, and
grabbed the three glasses he was holding out after jumping to the floor. They
carried the drinks into the living room, where Kaz and Paul were keeping each
other very busy. They stood watching for a while, before Sammie realised
“Paul,
if you don’t come up for air, your coffee’ll be colder than the cokes” Ben
nudged her, but Kaz and Paul finally broke apart, smiling guiltily. Ben sat on
his armchair and pulled Sammie onto his lap, and started whispering to her.
“What
are you two whispering about?” Paul asked, smirking.
“How
to kick you out so I can have a threesome with our girls”
Paul got up and made to leave
for them to do so. Kaz looked between Ben and Paul, shocked and a little
disgusted, and Sammie slapped Ben lightly.
“Don’t
wind him up you pig!”
“You
keep calling me a pig, I’m hurt!” Ben said, sounding offended.
“You
keep acting like a pig”
“Oink,
oink, baby!”
Paul rejoined Kaz on the sofa,
laughing.
“What’s
so funny about me being a pig?” Ben asked, sounding even more insulted. Kaz and
Paul merely broke down into further giggles. Ben turned Sammie’s face gently so
that they had eye contact.
“Babe,
wanna leave the hyenas and go to my room? I feel all ‘tired’ all of a sudden”
“Are
you calling your girlfriend a pig too?” Paul asked, calming down a bit.
“No,
when did I do that?”
“You
called her babe!”
Ben shrugged and Sammie
whispered in his ear.
“I am
actually really tired”
Ben nodded and turned to the
others, who were beginning to calm down properly.
“You
guys, we’re going to bed, I’m pulling out the sofa bed for you”
They nodded.
“We
haven’t heard about the date yet!”
“We’ll
tell you tomorrow, tonight we have jet lag”
The boys sorted out the sofa
bed, and Ben left to grab some bed sheets and pillows. Sammie looked over at
Paul and Kaz, who were kissing once again. They looked so good together, and
seemed really happy together. If they were like this tomorrow, even Christian
would want them together. Ben came back in the room, chucked the pillows on the
bed and dumped the sheets and duvet and blankets over Kaz and Paul, so only
their legs showed. He held out his hand. Sammie made her way over to him and
took it, and they escaped into Ben’s bedroom.
“That
was cruel Ben” Sammie tried to sound stern and look annoyed. Ben shut his door
and shrugged, grinning.
“So?
They were snogging in my flat. No one snogs more than me in my own flat” He
held her close to him. “Anyway, forget about them, they’re fine. I wanna know
how you are”
She looked up at him and saw
the concerned look in his eyes.
“I’m
fine, how about you?”
“I’m
great . . . are you sure you’re okay? You’ve been awfully quiet since the
plane. I haven’t done anything wrong have I?”
“No,
of course you haven’t! I’m just jetlagged, that’s all. I just wanna go to
sleep”
Ben nodded, gave her a small
squeeze and passed her one of his t-shirts to sleep in. She took it gratefully
and changed, then crawled into his bed and fell asleep instantly.
