Walking along the multi coloured path she kept her head down, not wanting to
draw attention to herself. Smiling at the gold’s and red’s at her feet she felt
herself become more relaxed as she gained some familiarity from the foliage.
Autumn had always been her favourite season, she didn’t seem to see it the way
everyone else did. Most of her family saw Autumn as a time of dying and
hardship but she saw it as a time to repent, getting rid of the old and
bringing out the new. Plus red’s, brown’s and gold’s were always more pretty to
look at than the average green.
Feeling something small and wet hit her cheek she looked up to the clouds to
see grey masses taking over the once blue sea that had reigned above. As the drips
became more consistent and harder she started to pick up her pace making her
long jeans swish around her feet. Grandmother had said that it wasn’t right for
her to dress in such a fashion, that a young maiden of such stature should
dress appropriately but that wasn’t what she had in mind. Her cousins Onyx and
Amethyst had kept to grandmothers rules perfectly. Never wearing anything but
their circle clothes, practising their chosen path every night, choosing their
circles by seventeen and never associating with humans. Kirsten however had
chosen a different way to lead her life, dressing in human clothes, practising
all of the arts when it suited her, going to circle midnight and twilight and
choosing to go to a public human school. Everything had been going great until
her aunt had died leaving her no one to stay with in L.A. and meaning that she
had to move in with her grandmother.
When she was small Kirsten had no trouble in making friends, but as she grew
up and saw the way that humans treated people who were different from
themselves, she had tended to stick with the people she was sure of and try and
avoid the unfamiliar. Now as she joined a new school she had no familiarity as
her safety blanket so if she didn’t meet some new friends she was going to be
alone… Still running with her hair now plastered to her face Kirsten thought of
what a bad impression it was going to make if she was late on her first day. A
collision with something much bigger than herself sent her thoughts and books
flying. Bending down immediately to pick them up she saw a muscular body and
then a friendly face also bending down to help her. As they both reached for
the same book she felt warmth and tingles shoot up her arm and through her body
as her hand met his. Shocked and frightened by this sudden feeling she pulled
her hand back immediately, as did he. Shock, wonder and awe was plastered on
both of their faces as they looked at their own hands.
“I…I’m sorry. I wasn’t looking where I was going…” The boy said eventually
as he handed her the remaining book that was on the floor.
“It’s okay I was in a world of my own.” Kirsten replied smiling shyly.
Pushing her hair out of her face she studied his profile carefully, blonde hair
falling around his eyes. Deep green friendly eyes and a perfect white dazzling
smile. Probably not one of her kind…
“Well then I guess we’re both in the wrong.” Pausing slightly the boy went
to hold out his hand but then drew it back as he seemed to remember what
happened last time they had touched. “I’m Christian.” He said finally.
“I’m Kirsten.”
“Are you new because I haven’t seen you around here before…” Christian said
as he raised to his full height. Kirsten followed his lead and looked up at his
clean cut profile. Even as the rain continued to soak him he didn’t seem to get
grimy or soggy like most other human boys, he just seemed to radiate and become
more handsome, as if not even nature could ruin his perfect image.
“Yes I’m new, I just moved in with my grandmother and so now I’m going to
school here.”
“What year are you?”
“I’m a senior. I’m guessing you are too?”
“Yeah I am. Maybe I’ll see you around…” Not waiting for anymore chat
Christian walked off towards the biggest building on the campus whilst Kirsten
continued to walk towards the main office. Surprisingly the late bell still
hadn’t rang so she was making good time. Tapping her white nails on the edge of
the desk she waited for the secretary to notice she was there.
“Can I help you?” The secretary asked smiling sweetly. Smiling back Kirsten
went through her bag until she found the pink paper she was looking for.
Placing it on the oak desk Kirsten waited as the secretary read it through,
making sure everything was in order.
“You’re majoring in performing arts and classical piano?” The secretary
asked raising her perfectly shaped eyebrow.
“Yes and a lower major in biology and classical civilisation.”
“Do you like to live in the past?” The secretary asked laughing.
“Not really… it’s just my family is very large and very traditional, I like
to see what happened around the time my ancestors were around.” Smiling
encouragingly at her the secretary stamped a few forms as fast as she could and
then placed them into Kirsten’s hands.
“Your first class starts in five minutes over in the music block, room 208 I
would hurry, I hear Mr. Stewart can be a real hard ass!” The secretary winked
and then went back to her computer screen as if nothing had ever happened.
Walking along the path in which she had only just come across she heard the
beads from her belt bang against her jeans as if trying to remind her of
something. As she reached the corner in which she had been sent flying earlier
she remembered Christian’s smiling face and found herself also smiling. When
she felt her cheeks starting to flush she knew she was in trouble. Being among
humans and being their friend was bad enough in her families eyes but fancying
one of them? That was against the law… literally. There were only a few laws
she was asked to obey whilst having her powers and if she was starting to have
feelings for a human then she would be violating the most important one…
Entering the tallest building she searched for room 208. There was one door
that stood apart from the rest, although all of them their own uniqueness none
of the rest had jewels and glitter on them. Also none of the others had guitars
and piano’s engraved in the wood. Seeing ‘208’ carved into the wood she opened
the door slowly to find twelve people turn to stare at her.
“Can I help you?” A tall greying haired man asked. Kirsten scanned the room
for anyone who would seem familiar or even friendly. She knew how futile this
was, this was her first day, she wasn’t going to recognise anyone here unless
they were a part of her world and that was very unlikely in a human school.
Kirsten was about to give up hope when she saw a blonde head bent over a desk
writing something down, when the head turned around and she saw that smile she
felt a small bit of hope rise in her. At least she sort of knew somebody…
“Yes I have just transferred from L.A. I’m in your class?” Kirsten said
sounding unsure of herself. What if her records hadn’t got through to him? The
man went to his desk and rifled through some papers, as he searched Kirsten
looked at the class again when she noticed something very unusual. There was
only one other girl in this class… the rest were boys who were now looking at
her as if she were a piece of meat and they had been on a famine. Looking at
Christian she noticed he was looking at her too but he just gave her a small
wave.
“Kirsten?” The man asked looking sceptical.
“Yes that’s me.”
“Well class this is the girl I have been telling you about!” The man said
grinning as he leant against his desk. “This is one of the most accomplished
piano players in America. A piano prodigy if you will. But the list doesn’t
stop there! Apparently you play guitar and drums too?” Since the man had
started to talk he had completely ignored Kirsten but now he was looking at her
awaiting an answer as was the rest of the class. Although most of the guys were
looking doe eyed there was one person in the classroom who seemed to be glaring
at her. The only female of the class…
“Yes I do play both guitar and drums but I’m really not that good.
I…dabble…” Kirsten really didn’t want the class to think that she was showing
off or trying to impress because she wasn’t. She didn’t even have to be here if
she didn’t want to, in her world teenagers didn’t have to go to school unless
they wanted to or needed to. Kirsten was only here because she thought it would
be an experience.
“Oh come now young girl! I’m sure you’re superb! Class it would be a good
idea to try and pick this young girls brain! She’s a prodigy I tell you!
Prodigy!” With that the teacher retired behind his desk and started to write
down notes on music paper. Kirsten just stood there as the rest of the class
either went to instruments, started writing or chatted amongst themselves. What
was she supposed to do? Walking towards the giant desk that Christian sat on
the end of she went to the farthest corner away from him and pulled out her
music note book. Although her grandmother would be devastated if she chose to
be a chantress Kirsten still liked to explore every option and started to work
on a health chant. When she felt a hand on her shoulder she jumped as the
warmth and tingles ran through her body setting off electric shocks through out
her. Jumping away from the touch and then immediately hiding the notebook she
tried to regulate he breathing as she tried to get over the feel of his touch.
Before she even turned around she knew who it was going to be. In her seventeen
years there was only one person that this had ever happened with which was why
she knew who it was and why she knew this was very dangerous. Turning around
slowly she saw those perfect green eyes again followed by the beautiful smile.
“Can…can I help you?” Kirsten asked shakily as she saw how he was looking at
his hand, as if it had betrayed him.
“I…erm…actually…no I don’t think you can…” Christian turned around looking as
confused as can be and then returned to his seat on the opposite side of the
desk. Something strange was going on and for one reason or another Kirsten knew
that it wasn’t going to be anything good so as she caught herself staring at
Christian for the second time she realised this sudden interest in a human boy
was very wrong…
