Chapter 60

“We have to go!”

Mel grabbed hold of his hand and pulled him towards the door.

“What’s happened?” Chris asked in confusion.

“I just have to get out of here,” Mel replied urgently, tugging hard until they were both safely out of the door, away from the evil party and back in the car.

As he shut the driver’s door behind him he turned to her, his eyes scanning over her face in the darkness. She moved away from him, not wanting him to be able to see the full extent of the evening etched on her face.

“Are you OK?”

His voice was gentle and kind – he cared.

“I just want to go home,” she replied quietly, “I want us to shut ourselves away so it can just be you and me.”

He reached out and turned the little light on, and putting his hands on her chin, forced her head round so he could look at her properly.

“You’ve been crying,”

“I’m fine,” she said, quickly pulling her head back from his hands, “please, just drive us home.”

Turning off the light he did as she asked, and no more was said until they were back in their flat, the door locked firmly behind them, wrapped up in each others arms on the sofa.

“You going to tell me what’s going on?” he asked her softly, rubbing his hand gently over her back.

She hid from him, burying her head deep into his jumper, and clinging to him tightly.  He didn’t ask again, just rocked her in his arms gently, calming her down.

“You care about me don’t you?” she asked, when she finally surfaced.

“Course I do stupid,” he replied affectionately.

“You’d never let anything come in between us would you?”

“What’s with all the questions?” he asked with a slight chuckle.

“I just don’t want you to leave me,” she said, her head pressed tightly against his chest.

“I’m not going to hun.”

“You’re not going to go back to Ella”

“Course not,” he replied, raising his eyebrows at her.

“If she forgave you and asked you back, you’d say no?”

“Course I would, I’m with you now,” he reached out to give her a kiss but she pulled back slightly.

“You’re with me, but you never say you love me.”

He gave her a weak smile and went back towards her for a kiss, but she put out a hand and gently pushed his face back.

“How long was it before you told Ella you loved her?” she continued.

“Me and Ella is completely separate to me and you,” Chris said gently, “it doesn’t matter what happened there, this is completely different.”

“Different worse, or different better?” she asked suspiciously.

“I don’t know Mel, different different,”

“What does that mean?  You loved her, and you don’t love me?  You want her, you want to be with her?” the words came streaming out of her mouth in a fast torrent, hitting him thick and fast.

“Mel, calm down”

“I can’t,” she confessed, “I can’t stop thinking about how awful things are.”

“Things aren’t awful, everything is fine,” he replied.

“They’re not”

“Well, everything was fine this afternoon before we left for this party,” he argued, “we were so happy this morning, what’s changed in one evening?”

She opened her mouth to speak again, but then stopped.  He was completely right, everything had been fine earlier.  This was all Mark’s fault, he was trying to ruin things between them, it had started already.  He had already confessed that he had never wanted them to be together in the first place, and now he was going to start trying to tear them apart.  She couldn’t let this happen to them, Mark could love her all he wanted – Mel was in love with Christian, and that was the way it was always going to stay.

“I’m sorry,” she said quietly, “I don’t know where any of this came from.”

“It’s OK,” he said gently, “I’m just worried about you”

“You really do care about me don’t you?”

“Of course I do.”

He gave her a little smile and when he reached down to gently kiss her she didn’t back away, just let herself get swept up in the moment, losing herself in each touch.

If only Mark Read could see them now, she was perfect with Chris.

It wasn’t long before they were naked on the living room floor, Chris lying on top of her, kissing her over and over again until she was breathless.  He made her feel so wanted and needed and when he became one with her, she was complete.  As she moved with him, she hugged him tighter, loving the fact that at that moment they were so connected.  His breathing quickened the same time as hers did, and as she gasped for breath she heard those words once more.

“I love you,” he whispered in her ear.

Giving him one last kiss, she gently pushed him off her.

“Say it again,” she commanded, rolling onto her side and looking straight at him.  He looked straight back at her, and gave her a gentle kiss.

“You need to stop doing that,” she said, pulling away.

“Doing what?”

“Playing with my emotions.”

“I’m not.”

“Say you love me then.”

He frowned at her, and picking up his clothes began to climb into them one by one.

“Say it!” she shouted.

“I can’t say it,” he replied, and with that he turned and left the room.
