ASM-IIM Lectures on Surface Engineering

and Failure Analysis

In the continuing series of ASM - IIM lectures, the Mumbai Chapter of IIM and the ASM International organized a technical meeting at Hotel Atithi, Vile Parle (E), Mumbai on Monday, November 17, 2003. Fifty four (54) persons from metallurgical industries in Mumbai region and from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai attended the meeting. Mr. Sabnis welcomed the participants on behalf of ASM International - India's Mumbai Chapter and IIM Mumbai Chapter and introduced the speakers. The scheduled lecture on "Intensive Quenching" by   Dr George E. Totten could not be delivered due to an unavoidable reason. Dr. M. K. Totlani delivered an informative lecture on "Criteria for Selection of Surface Engineering Technique". He discussed the relevance of surface engineering in modern engineering industry; classification of various surface engineering techniques, their characterization and limitations and the characteristics of the surface engineered surfaces they produce. Types of wear and the materials required for combating the wear were brought out by Dr Totlani. Typical check list to aid in the selection of proper surface engineering technique and the general design rules to be adopted were also discussed by him. He delved at depth on the criterion to be selected for obtaining a desired property through surface engineering. He covered surface modification techniques also. The second lecture was by Mr. Sandeep Parikh of Materials Technology Centre on "Practical Aspects of Failure Analysis". He discussed in detail a failure analysis of an undersea pipeline and presented a methodology for failure analysis. Both the lectures were followed by a question-answer session in which participants sought further information from the speakers. The interaction between the participants and the speakers continued afterwards at the dinner arranged for the members of both the institutes. The members appreciated the lectures and voiced opinion for more such lectures in future.
