Metals and Materials Quiz – 2006 

To mark its diamond jubilee year, the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Mumbai Chapter organized the “Metals & Materials Quiz-2006” for the junior college students (standard XI and XII) on Saturday, September 9, 2006. The initial written test and the two semi-final rounds of the quiz were conducted at the Multipurpose Hall, BARC Guest House, Anushaktinagar. Twenty teams from different junior colleges from the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai region participated in the quiz. Dr. Vivekanand Kain, the Convener of the quiz welcomed the students and Dr. G. K. Dey, Chairman of the IIM Mumbai Chapter talked about Indian Institute of Metals and its activities. Mr. B P Sharma, Associate Director, Materials group, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai recounted the experience of man with materials from the pre-historic era to the present age of rapid technological developments. He emphasized that the aim of this quiz is to kindle a desire among students to learn more about metals and materials. Mr K V Mani Krishna and Mr Nirupam Das, the co-conveners for the quiz, were the Quiz Masters for the two semi-final rounds. Four teams were selected for the final round of the quiz. The final round  was conducted at Nehru planetarium. Mr Suhas B.Naik-Satam, Programme Coordinator, conducted the final oral quiz contest. Mr. Piyush Pandey, Director, Nehru Planetarium addressed students, interacted with them and gave away the prizes to the winner and the runner up teams. Certificates of participation were presented to each participant. All the participants appreciated the “Awesome Universe” show about stars at the Nehru Planetarium.

The team from Swami Vivekanand Junior college, Chembur comprising of Mr. Pruthank Gharat and Dhananjay Bhandari got the first prize. The second Prize went to Mr. Abhiram Kannan, Albin Varghese and Abhijit Sinha of Father Agnel Junior college, New Mumbai. The winner team will represent the Indian Institute of Metals, Mumbai Chapter at the national level “Prof. Brahma Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz” to be held at Kalpakkam on September 30, 2006.
