AEJC Tarapur Wins Annual Materials Quiz

AEJC Tarapur won the Annual Materials Quiz organized by the Indian Institute of Metals, Mumbai Chapter. This year teams from 17 colleges from Mumbai and nearby regions participated in the quiz held on Saturday, September 6, 2003 at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Trombay, Mumbai. Each team comprised of three students who were selected from the 11th and 12th standards of their respective junior colleges. A rigorous training at their end made the students ready to test and explore the wonderful world of materials.

All the students from 17 junior colleges and their teachers were welcomed by the Secretary of IIM, Mumbai Chapter Dr. P P Date of IIT, Mumbai. Chairman of the Indian Institute of Metals, Prof. S. N. Malhotra of Indian Institute of technology, Mumbai. and Prof. B. P. Kashyap, the Head, Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science Department at IIT Mumbai introduced them to the world of materials. They explained how metals are extracted and fabricated and how their properties are tailored to meet specific requirements. They showed how strength of materials has been increased over the years. The students got to know the field of metallurgical engineering and materials science and also got to interact with scientists from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, faculty members from IIT Mumbai and industrialists in metallurgical industry in the Mumbai region. Shri Rakesh Kumar and Shri M T Saify of B A R C were the Convener and Co-convener respectively of the annual quiz.

After the first round of written test, eight teams were selected for the semi-final rounds. Shri S K Jha of B  A R C was the quiz master for Semi Final and Final Rounds. The four teams that qualified for the final were: Atomic Energy Junior College, Tarapur, Apeejay Junior College, Nerul, Father Agnel Junior College, Vashi and D G Ruparel College, Mahim. The final round of the quiz was a very close round with Manav Pandey, Rohit Pandharipande and Pratibha Thilak from AEJC Tarapur finally winning the honour for their college. This team from AEJC Tarapur would be sent to Kalpakkam for the National level quiz, Dr Brahma Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz that is organized by the Indian Institute of Metals. The winner at the national level quiz will be felicitated on November 14 at Kolkata where the Annual Technical Meeting of the Institute of Metals will be held this year.
