January 25 2003: Level flight in rotor/wave over Boulder foothills. View from N571J Discus CS "IJ" |
January 25 2003: Meteorological Situation. N-S rows of relatively low altitude weak rotors (achieved climb = 3-7 kts [1.5 - 3.5 m/s] ). Some pilots were circling under clouds (B). Straight N-S cruise resulted in about same achieved lift strength. |
January 2003: A very typical picture over the foothills of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Last hills in the center: the Faltirons SW of Boulder, Colorado. The waves are generated by the N-S ridge of the Continental Divide, typically 12,500 to 14,000 ft high West of Denver and Boulder. The terrain in the foreground is around 6000 ft MSL (1830 m), the peaks of the last row of foothils are at around 8500 ft (2600 m). Notice: no snow in January - quite typical. |
