InuYasha's story begins when he meets a powerful priestess who guards a sacred jewel that he needs to become a full youkai... Mean old, missunderstood hanyou going for glory that is behind a priestess's guard... You can only guess what happens...
InuYasha' knew that the Shikon No Tama could bring him the power and glory of full youkai blood, he also knew there was a beautiful priestess guarding it. What he didn't know was that he was going to end up falling in love with her. She fell for him too, but there was a catch. She wanted to lead a normal life, and having him as a hanyou wouldn't exactly be normal, as well as having to constantly protect the powerful jewel, so they tried to hit two birds with one stone and wish him human so the jewel would be destroyed on a pure wish and he would be a normal man and they could live happily ever after. On the day they were going to meet to make the wish Naraku, transformed into InuYasha, gave Kikyou a deadly wound and stole the Shikon No Tama from her posession. Then he replaced the tama and transformed into Kikyou to fool InuYasha into thinking that Kikyou was after him in the end. InuYasha, not knowing what had happened, thought she was betraying him instead and decided to turn youkai after all if she truely didn't care. Going to the shrine he found the jewel and stole it, almost escaping before she shot him with a sealing arrow to the sacred tree Goshinboku. After he died (or fell asleep) Kikyou then passed and was cremated with the tama. Then, 500 years later, came Kagome. She came, and she released him. Simple as that, though being Kikyou's reincarnation she looked much like her and must smell similar to her if InuYasha had mistaken her for the Priestess on their first encounter (when he was at least conciouse, that is.) They were forced together through a magic spell on a rosary placed around his neck that refrained him from attacking her and killing her for the jewel as well as the major factor that she had shattered it the next day in the attempt to kill a youkai that had eaten it. On their travels he started out hard and mean towards her but found himself instinctively beginning to worry over her and protect her over others in need be cases. After beginning to slightly realize he was falling for Kagome some witch person dug up Kikyous ashes and some burial soil to make up her body again. She needed a soul to move and speak and was said to, at that time, only be sustained by her hatred for InuYasha. The witch stole Kagome and gave her soul to Kikyou which gave Kikyou all of her strength and power back. She killed the witch and tried to Kill InuYasha but Kagome saved him by pulling back her souls in her worry for him. Ever since Kikyou is brought back to life InuYasha becomes confused over who it is he should truely love. He feels he is in debt to Kikyou for their past lives, though he cares for Kagome at the same time. He doesnt seem to realize that all Kikyou tends to do when they meet is verbally or mentally attack him in some way, and even though he tends to get very pissed off if she messes with Kagome he never manages to actually attack. Poor InuYasha, its a hard life being a cute hanyou.
