Biography

In the frozen north, on a desolate tundra in the dead of winter, a lone woman can be seen sitting beside a small hearth next to the frozen lake. Her eyes slowly open, bringing her back from her meditative state. The last vision she had disturbed and troubled her. Ataninnuaq quickly gathered her belongings as she prepared for the long trek back to her tribe.
It was a hellish winter, with snows that seemed to have been sent by Keelut himself. The journey would have killed many others, but Ataninnuaq need not fear the animals that hunted the region, nor they her. Ataninnuaq had gone out from the village several weeks ago seeking answers that she hadn't recieved, instead she only had more questions.
It was a boring hunting season for Anuniaq. Every season that passed seemed easier then the last to the gifted young man. The challenge was quickly fading, as was the thrill of it all. It seemed like only a few years ago that he had to beg the tribal elders to let him go on a hunt, and now he was leading allmost every one. This last hunt had allmost proved to be his last though. One of the older hunters in the tribe had missed the tracks of a paticularly mean spirited polar bear, and it had allmost meant the end for 5 men of the tribe. If Anuniaq had been too slow on his spear throw, or to slow with his hunting knife their would have been some crying children this night. But tonight was a cause of celebration! He had slain the bear, the tribe had enough meat for the next week at least, and he had on a brand new white fur cloak. Life seemed good, so why was he allways looking to the stars for something he knew to be missing?
"You're mother is back Anuniaq! One of the children has seen her coming over one of the hills."
It was Kinaktok, one of Anuniaqs closest friends and one of the men whose life he had saved. With a smile that nearly took in his ears Anuniaq ran passed his friend to the far corners of the village, trying to see which way his mother was coming from. It hadn't allways been easy being the son of a holy woman, especially one as revered as Ataninnuaq. But he had steped out of her shadow and any misconceptions people had that he would become a shaman, and was now the best hunter the tribe had seen in years. When he finally spotted her something ran cold in his blood. He had never in all his years seen his mother like this before. He watched her for what seemed like hours before she was finally back within the confines of the tiny village.
"Mother, how was your trip?"
Ataninnuaq didn't hear a thing, she gave her boy a quick hug and a fake smile before walking past. She had more important things to do then to exchange pleasntries with the young man. She had to talk to the other elders and figure out what should be done.
"Why have you called me here? I have done nothing wrong!" Anuniaq accused as much as asked. His mother rose from her seat, walked over to where Anuniaq was sitting and slapped him in the back of the head as if he were a boy of 12. "Mind your manners, I raised you better then that." she scolded before sitting back down. Issoratuyok looked to Anuniaq and gave a sympathetic smile to the embarressed young man before speaking. "Anuniaq, you have become a hunter without equal and are the hero of every child in the tribe. If not for you the winters would seem much colder without the extra furs and leathers your skills have provided and our bellies would be much less full. But your mother has come to us with her visions, and soon your time with us will be over.".
Anuniaq allmost fell out of his chair after hearing that last sentance. Issoratuyok paused for a second, letting Anuniaq deal with the weight of those last words before he continued. "We are troubled about your departure, but we will be fine. We did manage to survive countless years before you came along you know." he tossed a smirk at the cocky young hunter, knowing the hardships that were ahead of him and to let him know that they would be fine with him gone. In fact, with a chance to take the spot of hunt leader all the young men of the village would be in competition for the honor. This could be a vry comfortable winter indeed.
"What is the meaning of all this? Where am I to go?"Anuniaq roared as he jumped out of his seat, sending it crashing onto the floor. "Mother, tell them your visions are not allways correct! Tell them that I will stay with the village! I have much to do here....". His rant was quickly interupted by his mothers calming voice. "Do you think that I want you to go? You are my son, and I worry about your life every time that you exit this village, and now I must send you farther out into the world than any of our tribe have ever travelled. I cannot explain to you why you must go, just know that you must.".
Anuniaq just stood there looking at his mother. Her face held so much love and worry for him that he lost all urge to argue. He sighed and took a deep breath to help calm and steady himself. "Ok, when do I leave?"
