The project pursues the general aim to improve competitiveness of Malaysian companies by enhancing qualifications of workers using the information obtained from the performed analysis of the educational and production sector.

This project will be carried out with as a base the detected shortcomings and potential improvements and by exploiting strong points and opportunities of the environment.

The MSI must become a key, reference and the most adequate focal point (near industrial nucleus, potential of infrastructure, social, industrial and institutional support, etc.) to respond to the most important detected deficiencies.

In this sense, bearing in mind that the possibilities of an adequate response to all specific needs of the different activities of the Malaysian manufacturing industry are limited, we have opted to establish a technician typology which will have a substantial impact on improvements of the production system of all sectors in general.

Because of the whole extent of product design and manufacturing and of equipment automation and maintenance as well as the need to dispose of middle management for all types of industry, the MSI must be developed according to the guidelines below.

Thus, the MSI must act as a driving force in the production sector and on a social level, by taking on an active role in development projects, and therefore they must pursue the following goals:

Bear in mind that this is merely an initial phase of developing the institute; as soon as this maturing process is completed, more attention can be paid to the specialisation of different activity sectors.

* Contribute to the development of the manufacturing industry in Malaysia.

* Train technicians in product design in mechanical manufacturing with a profound knowledge of material (metal, plastic, etc.) and CAD, who are able to design moulds, parts, etc.

* Train production technicians in management, innovation and in leading development and manufacturing processes of industrial products.

* Train multidisciplinary maintenance (electro-mechanics) technicians in management and in introducing maintenance processes.

* Train technicians in operating a variety of high-tech machines.

* Qualify young unemployed to be able to participate on the job market.

* Cover the needs for an adequate training of employed workers by providing quality courses in design, manufacturing, quality, safety and hygiene, maintenance, management and pedagogic training of instructors.

* Technical support service to SMEs in the improvement of their production processes, management and quality and in development of new products.

* Offer training in administration and management of SMEs.

* Act as a job agency.
