Todi
Todi - Piazza del Popolo
Il Cardo is about 6 km from Todi and 3.5 km from the nearest shop. There is virtually no public transport in the area, and the railway station is about 5 km away. To get to Todi or anywhere else, you'll need a car. If you like cycling - healthier and more environmentally friendly - we'll be happy to rent you a bicycle. But remember that Umbria is hill-country... you have to be VERY well trained!
Todi and Umbria
Todi, a splendid city of ancient origins, enjoys a privileged position in Umbria. Since it lies practically at the centre of the region, with Todi as your base you'll find all the places most famous for art and history - Perugia, Orvieto, Spoleto, Assisi, Narni, Amelia, Foligno, Bevagna, Montefalco - within a 40-km radius.
Todi's castles
Even nearer to the city, the landscape is full of delightful views strewn with tiny hamlets enclosed by medieval walls: Todi's castles. Visiting them you can discover the unhurried pace and ways of life as old as Umbria itself. Each village is a surprise, even the smallest and least written-up in the tourist guides. And between one village and another lie traces of a history-rich past: Etruscan and Roman ruins, churches, abbeys and convents, springs and ancient farmhouses.
The city of Todi
Nestling on the hill that dominates the Tiber Valley, Todi was once the border-town between Etruscan and Roman lands. The Etruscan, Roman and medieval walls still standing testify to the most important stages in the history of this city, for centuries a vitally important centre at the crossroads of Umbria. The glory of its monuments takes us back to when Todi was a free commune, in the XIII and XIV centuries, and to the Renaissance, when art unique of its kind was created here, such as the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione attributed to Bramante, the world-famous architect. The duomo, the Temple of San Fortunato, the magnificent palaces of the Piazza del Popolo, the churches of Santa Maria in Cammuccia and Sant'Ilario, the Fonti Scarnabecco are other precious gems crowning an urban setting that maintains its typically medieval meanderings.
All of Umbria, and more
When in Todi, you will certainly want to roam through Umbria seeking its hidden beauties. And so it is worthwhile keeping in mind splendid Spello, Sangemini and the Carsulae ruins, the Marmore waterfalls, Deruta and its pottery, the springs of Clitumno, Trevi, lakes Trasimeno, Corbara, d'Alviano (now a WWF oasis), and the little lake of Piediluco. And if you want to step outside the region, among the thousand other places to see there are two splendid sights in upper Lazio, just half-an-hour away: the Renaissance Park of the Monsters in Bomarzo, and the overwhelming lunar beauty of Civita di Bagnoregio, one of the marvels of Italy.
