On the way to SF, we stopped in Cambria, a swell place off the 1 in CA to stay directly across from the ocean on Moonstone Drive. If you live in L.A., it’s about a 3 hour drive (stop in Santa Barbara for lunch!). You’ll want to walk along the cliffs over the ocean until the sun goes down. Then what? Head to Robin’s. This is a GREAT place for vegetarians and non-vegetarians to dine together. And beautiful…get yourself seated on the patio – forget how cold it is – there are heaters. It’s partially enclosed with giant, aged grapevines swooping around the windows. There are white Christmas lights. There is great food. (There is also a really great kids book store across the street and down the block a little if you like that sort of thing). Take Main Street (from Moonstone Drive: a left, then straight across Hwy 1 at the light, straight --you’re now on Main St.) until you’re sure you’re completely lost, then turn right onto Burton. If you go back on the 1, you’ll make a left on Burton, but it will swing around steeply, you will get lost but then you’ll find it after seeing most of the neighborhood. Trust us. On to the food:

We went for dinner and both ended up ordering the Hot and Spicy Tempeh ($10.95). Steven got it hot, I got it wimpy and both were good. We both had enough tempeh left over after stuffing ourselves solid to eat the next day after a climb around Big Sur. The tempeh is very unique; not very fermented tasting, made with very small soybeans and infused with soy sauce and some oil (but not greasy!). Served over brown, yes brown basmati rice with a ton of mixed vegetables. We finished with Bittersweet Chocolate Cake ($6.00), because we could. It was delicious, served with homemade whipped cream and an edible flower. They also had Tiramisu, Lemon Cheesecake, Belgian Dark Chocolate Mousse, and we didn’t hear anyone complaining. We saw lots of doggie bags, though. Bring a cooler and get a hotel with a refrigerator freezer!

For the non-vegetarians, there are plenty of fish, meat and chicken dishes. An example (though, please, do check their web site!): Beef Tenderloin Brochette with Korean Teriyaki Dipping Sauce ($16.95) – served with brown basmati rice and grilled vegetables. Pasta: Salmon Fettuccine ($15.95) – in a fresh dill cream sauce.

There are plenty of lunch entrees for both veggies and non- as well – Black Bean Burritos ($6.50), sandwiches, salads, etc. A beautiful place to go after a nice walk on the beach!
