THIRD ANNUAL COCKTAIL - August 7, 2003 Our third annual cocktail was held on Thursday August 3rd, at the Torcuato Di Tella University in Buenos Aires. More than 40 alumni & friends attended, including Martha Buckley, Cultural Affairs Officer at the local US Embassy. We also had representatives from the Alumni Foundation of Argentina (ALFA) and from other foreign universities alumni clubs. At the event our first "Honorary
Members" were designated. They are Carlos Ezcurra, International
Relations, Argentinian Catholic Carlos Ezcurra was the only honorary member that was present in the meeting. The diploma for Tom Haran was presented in person by Mercedes Iacoviello in Washington three days after the cocktail (that is what we call express delivery!!), and Tom Ulen received his diploma in Buenos Aires last September, when he visited for a few days to teach at Universidad Di Tella. Hopefully we will have Paula Havlik visiting Buenos Aires soon to give her this recognition in person too. By the end of the cocktail we had our traditional "Illini Raffle". Tommy Elosegui (born and raised at U-C, five year old son of Pedro and Gaby Elosegui) was the official helper for the raffle. The lucky winners left the meeting very happy with their U of I memorabilia. We had a great time meeting once again with all friends, and welcoming other Illinis that came for the first time. Don´t miss the pictures of this event in our Photos section!
END-OF-YEAR ASADO
- December 21, 2002 It was a nice informal gathering outdoors, with a turnout of about 25 people. We had very good "choripan" (sausage sandwich), and "lomo de cerdo" (pork tenderloin). The official cooks for the event were Pedro Elosegui, Marcelo Rabossi and Walter Sosa Escudero. That proves that three Illinois PhD´s are enough to prepare a BBQ! Tom Haran, from the US Embassy in Buenos Aires, was controlling very closely the cooking process. He seems to be an expert after three years in the country. This time he attended the event with his son, who was visiting the city for a few weeks. Laura Ripani, the president of Comunidad Argentina at Urbana Champaign, brought a number of Illini gifts for our traditional raffle. But this time, the prizes went for those that knew the answers to a UofI Trivia. Just in case, start preparing for the next one! You must keep update about information like the name of the present chancellor, number of graduates at the university, and so on... Don´t miss the pictures of this event in our Photos section! SECOND ANNUAL COCKTAIL, July 31, 2002 Our second meeting (first meeting July 19th, 2001) took place in Buenos Aires, on the evening of July 31st. 2002, at the Auditorium Monseñor Derisi, Universidad Católica Argentina. With 60 people attending the cocktail, a true "Illini Spirit" prevailed, partly thanks to the special decoration sent by the Illinois Alumni Association for this event. With funding from the Illinois Alumni Association we were able to cover the cocktail costs, and also able to partly cover traveling costs for two UofI graduates who live very far from Buenos Aires. Our special thanks to the Illinois Alumni Association!! Among the people attending were graduates
from different schools, exchange students, and students about to begin
their studies at the Uof I. In the middle of the cocktail we had a
more "formal" event, in which our evening's Don´t miss the pictures of this event in our Photos section!
LAUNCHING MEETING - July 19, 2001 Our first meeting took place in Buenos Aires, on July 19, 2001, at the Auditorium Monseñor Derisi, Universidad Católica Argentina. We had a very interesting and productive meeting despite of the rain, the hailstorm and the national strike we had that day! Among the 50 people who came were graduate students from different schools, students that are about to start their programs at U of I, authorities of other foreign universities Alumni Clubs, and American students from U of I who are doing exchange programs in Buenos Aires. We also enjoyed the company of the United States embassy’s cultural aggregate, Mr. Thomas Haran. The cocktail allowed an informal contact among all of us. We enjoyed an authentic Illini atmosphere thanks to the decoration specially sent from the Illinois Alumni Association for this event. We also shared a more formal section when the special guests made their presentations in the auditorium. The Director of International Relations of Universidad Catolica Argentina, Carlos Ezcurra, as the host of the event, gave us a warm welcome. Guillermo Cabanellas, distinguished graduated student and a Law School professor at the U of I, said some words about our experience as Illinois students and introduced our special speaker, Professor Tom Ulen, Distinguished Alumni Professor of Law. It is important to mention that professor Ulen came specially to Buenos Aires for our meeting, representing the University of Illinois, sponsored by the Law School. See an updated version of the slide show (.pps, 263Kb) we presented at the meeting, describing the goals of the club, the activities we are developing and the future steps to take. We had media coverage of this event! The news about our first meeting was published at Illinois Alumni, November-December 2001, Club Hopping section, pp. 35 It was also mentioned at the Illinois Jurist, Fall 2001, Global Alumni section, pp. 36.
