A flash of lightning illuminated the living room of the Amrit household, where Deon was sitting in darkness. The storm had caused a blackout. Besides the lightning, the only light in the house were the candles Deon had placed around the room. I hate lightning, I hate lightning, I hate lightning, Deon repeated in her head as she sat scrunched up in the corner of the couch. Why did my family decide to leave me here all alone with a big scary storm!?! Any minute Deon was sure she would see a ghastly face in the window, ready to devour her innocent body. An overactive imagination and a blackout are not a good mix...Her fearsome guard dog, a fat old cocker spaniel named Noodles, was sleeping oblivious at her feet. Why hadn't I gone with them to Gramma's house?? she asked herself. The truth was she really did want to go with her family to visit her grandmother but she had the strangest sense of feeling that she should remain home. All day she had been anticipating something was going to happen. What it was she wasn't sure. She fingered the necklace around her neck. Hanging from the delicate silver chain was a strange pendant of a hand grasping the earth. Yesterday she found the pendant in her jewelry box. No one in her family had any idea where it came from. It just mysteriously appeared. Ooo, spooky o_o Suddenly, a crash sounded from upstairs. Deon was so wired up that she shrieked with surprise. Burglars! Ghosts! Murderers!! her mind raced as her pulse quickened and her breath shortened. "If I just sit here it will go away," she whispered to herself. As if to spite her, she heard another crash. Deon took a deep breath and pushed herself up from the couch. She grabbed a candle and slowly made her way upstairs. As she was tip-toeing up the stairs the power suddenly flickered back on. "Thank God," breathed Deon as she continued to creep upstairs. She soon found the source of the noise, the wind had blown open the window in her room. Deon breathed a sigh of relief as she walked over to close it. "Well, I see you finally managed to gather your courage enough come upstairs and investigate the noise." At the sounds of the obviously male voice coming from behind her Deon screamed like she had never screamed before and made for the door. Standing in the doorway blocking her way was a slender gray cat, wet and disheveled from the rain. "Wait! Don't go! I have been waiting for you for a very long time!!" the cat shouted as it leapt on to her dresser. When Deon realized it was the cat talking her face broke into a wide grin. She started talking a mile a minute. "Waiting for me?! I have been waiting for you!! So are you Artemis? No you couldn't possibly be Artemis because you are gray, Diana maybe, naw, you are a guy, hey, where's your bandaid to hid your crescent moon, wait, where's your crescent moon? Dammit, I wanted to pull the bandaid off, that was such a monumental moment, hey, where's my transformation pen, am I the moon princess? I knew Sailor Moon wasn't just a story, Naoko Takeuchi is a messenger right? Is she a senshi, she must be, no one has those ideas come straight from their brain? Dammit, where's my Tuxedo Mask? Hey are the bad guys as good looking..." Deon said in one breathless gasp before the cat cut her off. "Will you, PLEASE, be quiet for one moment!!!" the cat shouted. "Uhm, okay. You don't have to shout," Deon said as she flopped down on her bed. The cat closed his eyes in exasperation, "First off, I don't know who Artemis or Diana or the Naoko Takeuchi or any of that is." "Aww," Deon sighed. The cat looked her up and down cautiously, "You couldn't possibly be the one I am looking for. No way would Gaea have chosen such a.....ditz." "No! I am the one!" Deon gasped, "Really!! Whose Gaea?" The cat ignored her questions as he paced around the room muttering to himself. Finally he looked up. He jumped onto her lap and stared into her eyes. Ew, cat breath, thought Deon. After a few moments he jumped off her lap on to the bed. "Well, you are wearing the pendant. So I guess you are who I am looking for," he said. Deon giggled with delight. "Be quiet while I explain," the cat said sharply, "I am Hermes." That got Deon started on another verbal rampage. "Hermes? What weird name, wasn't he a Greek god or something, he was in that stupid Disney movie Hercules, man was that movie dumb, it didn't even follow the actual story, just like that hunchback movie, didja know that Esmeralda doesn't actually live, ew, wasn't Frollo gross, didja know that his voice was the same as..." Hermes cut her off with a sigh. "Sorry," Deon said sheepishly. "As I was saying, my name is Hermes, the messenger god," he said with pride. His face feel at the look of sheer confusion of Deon's face. "Anyway, my job is to awaken the powers of the Olympians in the bodies of mortals so they can protect the earth against the Titans." Another blank stare from Deon (kinda looked like this o_O [which is what I look like 24/7]). "In you rests the power of Gaea, the supreme mother. With your pendant you can harness that power and transform into Sailor Gaea." Blank stare. "Together with the other Divine Senshi it is your destiny to make sure Uranus doesn't have his way..." Blank stare. "Look, how can I explain it more clearly..." Hermes sighed. "Draw a picture?" Deon said helpfully. "Of course! How could I forget!" Blank stare o_O Hermes closed his eyes in concentration. In front of him appeared a leather bound book decorated with gemstones with the title "A History of the Deities" embossed in gold on the cover. "Read this," Hermes said. Deon picked up the book running her hands over the beautiful cover. She flipped the pages, entranced by the words unfolding before her. Every now and then she would utter a gasp of surprise or mutter "Oh, I see". When she finished she asked, "Why is the last chapter blank?" "Well," Hermes answered, "It's not written yet." Before Deon's eyes the words "The Divine Senshi" appeared on the page in gold ink. Underneath the title was her picture. "Wow!" Deon gasped. "Do you understand?" Hermes asked. "Well, I understand a lot better than before. Uranus is a big bad guy and along with his other big bad people he wants to take over the world. But they are all weak from years of imprisonment so they need energy. The Divine Senshi have to stop them using the powers of the Olympians before they take over the world and bring down death and darkness on us all!!!" Deon summed up in one breath. "Erm, yes. That is essentially it.," Hermes said. "To transform all you need to do is shout "Gaea Orb Evolution!" while grasping your pendant" Deon sucked in a deep breath, "Gaea Orb...." Hermes cut her off, "Not yet! Preserve your strength. The Titans have not yet resurfaced. We need to gather the other Divine Senshi." "Hmm, okay," Deon answered despondently. "How will we know who is a Divine Senshi?" "Don't worry, when the time comes, you will know." Hermes yawned. He didn't think explaining all this would be this stressful. Great, he thought sarcastically, now I only have to explain this to ten more girls.
