- Firmware Internet Readme - AlphaStation  200/250

- Copy Firmware Release Notes 
- The release notes provide the name(s) off the firmware update
- utility file(s) you need to run on your  Alpha system, and walk
- you through the firmware update procedurre. From the table below,
- download the release notes from the doc  directory in the V5.5 CD
- area.

- Choose a method for updating the firmwarre 
-
- The firmware update methods supported foor the AlphaStation
- 200/250 are shown in the table below. Cllick on a method for
- detailed instructions on updating the fiirmware using that
- method.

- Update Method -
-
- Bootable Disk A: FAT-formatted Floppy
- * create a bootable FAT-formatted (DOS)  floppy disk.
- This disk can be created on any system tthat can create
- a FAT floppy (Win NT, Win 95, DOS, etc.))
-
- Bootable Disk B: OpenVMS
- * create a bootable FILES11 (VMS file foormat) floppy disk
-
- Bootable Disk C: Digital UNIX
- * create a bootable floppy disk.
-
- BOOTP: Network access to Digital UNIX seerver
- * to update firmware over a network usinng BOOTP protocol
-  
- MOP: Network access to OpenVMS server
- * to update firmware over a network usinng MOP protocol
-
- System disk: OpenVMS
- * update firmware by copying the firmwarre files to the
-   OpenVMS system disk and then booting tthe update utility
-   directly from that disk
-
- Important: The default settings on some  browsers may
- cause downloading problems with filenamees having the
- extensions *.sys, *.btp, and *.rom. If yyou experience
- difficulties downloading files of those  types, please add
- those extensions to MIME type applicatioon/octet-stream.

- *-*-* Bootable Floppy A - FAT Floppy 
- From the table below, download the approopriate firmware update 
- image from the alpha200 directory in thee V5.5 CD area
-
- Model                              Firmwware Image
- AlphaStation 200/250 Model 4/xxx   as2000_v7_0.exe

- Copy the downloaded file to a blank FAT  formatted floppy as 
- a:\fwupdate.exe. 
- IMPORTANT: The file must be named fwupdaate.exe, and must be 
- placed in the top-most level (root) direectory on the floppy, or 
- the image file will not be found properlly. 
-
- ARC Console: Place the floppy in the tarrget system, and from the 
-              ARC Console menu, select "IInstall new firmware".
- BIOS Console: Place the floppy in the taarget system, and 
-               from the AlphaBIOS menu, sselect "Update AlphaBIOS". 
-

- *-*-* Bootable Floppy B - Make a Bootablle Floppy (OpenVMS systems)

- From the table below, download the approopriate firmware update 
- image from the alpha200 directory in thee V5.5 CD area

- Note: If your floppy drive is named someething other than dva0, 
-       use that name instead of dva0 in tthe following steps.

- Enter the following commands in the direectory containing 
- fwupdate.exe on an OpenVMS system to makke a bootable floppy: 
-
- $ set file/attr=(rfm:fix,lrl:512,mrs:5122,rat:none) fwupdate.exe
- $ init/dens=HD/index=begin dva0: fwupdatte
- $ mount dva0: fwupdate
- $ create/dir dva0:[alpha200]
- $ copy/contiguous fwupdate.exe dva0:[alppha200]
- $ mcr writeboot
- No

- [enter AXP bootfile:] dva0:[alpha200]fwuupdate.exe
- $ dismount dva0:

- Insert the floppy on the target system aand boot it from the SRM 
- console:

- *-*-* Bootable Floppy C - Boot Floppy (DDigital UNIX systems)

- From the table below, download the approopriate firmware update 
- image from the alpha200 directory in thee V5.5 CD area

- Rename the downloaded file to fwupdate.eexe.

- Download the file mkbootfirm.tar from thhe utilities directory in 
- the top level of the firmware area.

- You can untar mkbootfirm on a Digital UNNIX system with the 
- command: 
-
- tar xvf mkbootfirm.tar 
-
- Make sure you have a floppy that has beeen low-level formatted. 
- For example, to low-level format a flopppy in drive zero:
-
- fddisk -fmt /dev/rfd0a
-
- Run mkbootfirm on the .exe firmware imagge that you downloaded. 
- mkbootfirm uses a .exe firmware image too create a file that can 
- be dd'd to a floppy.
-
- Enter the following command to create a  bootable floppy from a 
- downloaded .exe firmware image:
-
- ./mkbootfirm fwupdate.exe | dd of=/dev/rrfd0c bs=64k 
-
- NOTE: This assumes the mkbootfirm executtable is in the current
-       directory and that the floppy is iin drive zero.
-
- Insert the floppy on the target system aand boot it from the SRM 
- console: 
-

- *-*-* BOOTP - Network Update Using the BBOOTP protocol (Digital UNIX 
-               systems)

- From the table below, download the approopriate firmware update 
- image from the alpha200 directory in thee V5.5 CD area.

- Copy the downloaded file to a UNIX basedd network server for 
- BOOTP booting on the target system. For  details on configuring 
- the BOOTP server, refer to Digital UNIX  documentation or the 
- target system's Firmware Release Notes ddocument.

- *-*-* MOP - Network Update Using the MOPP protocol (OpenVMS systems) 
-
- From the table below, download the approopriate firmware update 
- image from the alpha200 directory in thee V5.5 CD area

- Copy the downloaded file to an OpenVMS bbased network server for 
- MOP booting on the target system. For deetails on configuring the 
- MOP server, refer to OpenVMS documentatiion or the target 
- system's Firmware Release Notes documentt.

- To ensure that the downloaded file is inn a proper VMS fixed 
- record format, please use the following  command before using the 
- file for MOP booting: 
-
- $ set file/attr=(rfm:fix,lrl:512,mrs:5122,rat:none) 
- "fwupdate.sys" 
-
- NOTE: Replace "fwupdate.sys" with the naame of the firmware image 
-       you downloaded.

- *-*-* System Disk - Boot the Update Utillity from an
-                     OpenVMS System Disk  
-
- From the table below, download the approopriate firmware update 
- image from the alpha200 directory in thee V5.5 CD area
-

- Rename the downloaded file to fwupdate.eexe. 
- Enter the following commands on the targget OpenVMS system:
- $ set file/attr=(rfm:fix,lrl:512,mrs:5122,rat:none) fwupdate.exe
- $ copy/contiguous fwupdate.exe "system_ddisk":[sys0.sysexe]

- NOTE: Insert the name of your system dissk in place of 
-       "system_disk", for example dka100::. 
-
- Shut down the operating system, to get tto the console prompt. 
- Boot the update utility from the consolee as follows: 
-
- P00>>> boot dka100 -flags 0,a0 
-
- NOTE: Replace dka100 with the "system_diisk" from previous step. 
-       After some printouts, you will be  asked for the bootfile.
-       Enter the directory and file name  as follows : 
-
- Bootfile: [sys0.sysexe]fwupdate.exe
