Day 2
We woke up early this morning and got ready. Breakfast was rice, beans, eggs, and fresh fruit including watermelon, pineapple, and mango. The mango juice was very good. We got time after breakfast to draw and write in here, so I brew some of the plants. I wish I could draw better so I could really capture what they look like, but oh well.
We just discovered that we left a bag at the San Jose airport. Christian, our driver, had to unpack all the luggage from the top of the bus and re-pack it. He's nice, and a good driver on these crazy roads. The temperature is nice and it's humid because it rained this morning.
We went back to the airport and got the missing bag, then headed to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. On the way, we took lots of pictures. You could see all the way to the Nicoya Gulf. It was very beautiful. I've never seen a view like that in my life. When we got to lodge, we went on a short hike. Karla showed us how to connect more with nature by touching, smelling, and listening to everything around us rather than just seeing. I thought that was really interesting and I enjoyed experiencing the forest in a new way. I thought that it was worthwhile to "see" the rainforest with all my senses.
After that, I settled into Room 19 with Veronica, Erinn, and Ashley. I went for a run with Nisha, and the hills were terrible. I wasn't used to it at all - everything's so flat in Richmond. I hope I don't get too sore. Oh, I almost forgot! Before I went running, we went to go see hummingbirds outside the main lodge. They had brighter colors than the ones I see at home in our feeders.
Dinner was delicious, as usual. I've been trying to get a taste of everything here and clean my plate. The food has definitely not disappointed me. After dinner we had the first book review discussion. Veronica went and she read Deep Ocean Journeys. I thought she did a really fantastic job when she talked about it, and I could relate to a lot of the things that she discussed, like having a passion for learning. I also agreed with her about ignorance being a huge problem. Somehow the conversation became about women and joked that men tell that can be offensive. I think we were discussing how being a woman affected the author's experiences. The conversation continued for a long time. Finally we went to sleep, although some people *cough* boys *cough* kept me up with their talking. =)
Back to the rest of the Journal!
