My 4th Great Grandparents

 

Thomas Noakes, son of William and Elizabeth Honice, was born April l8, 1791, in Udimore, near Ray, Sussex County, England.  He married Emma Inkpen, March 30, 1810. Emma was born October 25, 1789 daughter of Edward and Susannah Cossam Inkpen. Emma was tall and slenderly built and had brown eyes and medium black hair. Their children are George, 1811, Thomas, 1813, Emma, 1815, Edward, 1816, William, 1818, John, 1821, Francis, 1824, Robert, 1827 and John Hubbard, 1832. All but John Hubbard were born in England, John Hubbard was born in Ohio.  Their oldest son George stowed away on a vessel bound for America. The Captain of the ship befriended him and helped him get employment on Lake Erie. George saved his money so that he could bring his parents and siblings to America.

They came to America between 1827 and 1831 (no knowledge of what company or boat they came on).

They settled in Ohio. At the courthouse in the town of Medina, Medina Co, Ohio on June 22, 1840, Thomas made his application before the court to become a citizen of the United States of America. On June the 25th the papers were signed and the seal of the court on them.  So he became a citizen of the United States in the 64th year of its Independence.

While in Ohio, the Noakes family, tilled the soil, and cleared the timber off as they were farming.  In England he worked in some factory.  There was a button factory owned by the Noakes family in England. They joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about 1842.

On July 26, 1843 they went to Nauvoo, Illinois there he labored on the Temple and the Nauvoo House, from July 1843 at different times until December; then again in March, April, May and June of 1844. He worked and bought stock in the Nauvoo House. Thomas Noakes was a bodyguard for the Prophet Joseph Smith in Nauvoo.

December 23,1844, Thomas re­ceived a Patriarchal Blessing by Patriarch John Smith, there in Nouvoo, after the Prophets death.  He was promised that he would come to Zion, be blessed with a numerous posterity, and that his years should be many.

Conditions were such that the Saints had to move away from Nauvoo. Thomas and Emma Noakes were Utah Pionners with an ox team in l847. They came into the Salt Lake Valley with a team made up of two oxen, tow cows and two heifers. They settled in the Salt Lake Valley. Emma died in April 22, 1851 in Salt Lake City, Utah and is buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

 Thomas later went to Ohio and married Elizabeth Mead Wilcox and settled in Utah in 1852. Thomas paid hid tithing in full in Salt Lake City. One receipt dated September 1852 shows him as a full tithe payer. He came right on into Springville, UT where he built two log rooms just east of hobble creek. He was not much of a public man, but took part in the Church and civic work the nineteen years he lived in Springville, UT.

Thomas married third Dolly Griddle, she was born June 8, 1784. Thomas was thrown and dragged by his horse, which became frightened, when a man handed him something in a white flour bag, this finally cause his death.

Thomas died on September 1,1871 in Springville, UT, he is buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery by Emma is first wife. Dolly followed Thomas in death by 12 days. Another trip to Salt Lake City had to be made to bury her. She is buried with Thomas and Emma.

A Blessing by John Smith, Patriarch, upon the head of Thomas Noakes, son of William and Elizabeth H Noakes, born in Sussex, England. 1791.

Beloved brother I lay may hands upon thy head and seal a father's blessing upon thee in the name of Jesus Christ, thou art an heir to the blessings of the Priesthood having descended from Abraham through the loins of Benjamin, are entitled to by inheritance to the Priesthood which was sealed upon the Fathers, even Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, called to be a savior on Mount Zion, therefore gird up they loins and prepare thy self for an endowment in the house of the Lord, which will enable thee to save they dead friends for many generations which have past away, that will be revealed to thee, thou shalt also be a savior to many of the living and bring them to Zion through all troubles that may come in thy way, for no power shall hinder thee: Thou shalt have a numerous posterity.

This blessing shall be perpetuated to them forever, and thy name shall be had in honorable rememberance in the Church forever. The years shall be many, thou shalt be satisfied with every good thing and inherit eternal life.

George Noakes was born Sept. 4, 1811, at Sussex, England, a son of Thomas and Emma Inkpen, Pioneers of 1847 Ox Team. George married Sophia Crowfoot January 1848 at Nauvoo. Illinois. So­phia Crowfoot was born Feb. 1, 1818. She is the daughter of Benjamin and Samantha Sacked Crowfoot.

George Noakes stowed away in a vessel bound for America, the Captain took him in and helped him with a job on Lake Erie. George saved enough money to send his family to America. The family came to Utah in 1847 by Ox Team. His father, Thomas, was one of Joseph Smith's bodyguards in Nauvoo.

George and his wife came to Charles­ton in 1859. According to the inscription on the pioneer monument at Charleston they and a William Manning were among the first settlers. He built a house near a spring down by Provo River and lived there a number of years and later built a house on Main Street about two blocks north of the pioneer monument.

He helped to buy a  threshing   machine and ran the horse power as long as he was able. He was a farmer, Indian War veter­an, was a High Priest, Ward teacher, Bishop, and Superintendent of the Sunday school. He was well acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith.

They were the parents of eight children: George Washington, William Hubbard, 'Thomas Nephi., Emma Inkpen (Mrs. John Winterton), Mary Elizabeth, John Hubbard, David E., and Robeert Avery.

John Hubbard was born March 19, 1859 at Alpine, Utah, the son of Utah Pioneers George and Sophia Crowfoot Noakes. John married Margaret Priscilla Casper 15 May 1889 in the Manti Temple, Manti, Utah. She was born June 4, 1872 in Charleston, Wasatch, Utah, a  daughter of William Nephi Casper and Agnes McFarland. Margaret’s mother Agnes was a immigrant from Scotland, and  a Utah Pioneer in 1864 with her parents.

John was an elder, ward teacher, constable, town marshal, road supervisor and a farmer and stock raising most of his life. John and Margaret moved to Park City in April 1923 when John worked as a Teamster for Len McGarry for a number of years. He later worked for the city as a watermaster until his retirement in 1935.

Their children are: Mary June Jennie (Mrs. John Gordon). David Avery,  Mable Sophia (Mrs. Frederick Howarth), Gertrude Louisa (Mrs. Jesse Gordon), William Ruben, Wallace Nephi,  Erving Arthur, Beat­rice Verga, Vidia Luella, Reva Agnes (Mrs. William Richardson), Margaret Marie (Mrs. Oren Anderson).

John and Margaret made their home in Charleston, Wastach, Utah. John died May 31, 1954 in Park City, Wasatch, Utah and

Margaret died on July 11, 1941 in Park City, Wasatch, Utah. They are buried in the Charleston Cemetery.
