Letters of 'Fifth Beatle' Stu Sutcliffe return home
by Paul Majendie Reuters LONDON - The letters and art of "Fifth Beatle" Stuart Sutcliffe came back to Liverpool, birthplace of the world's most famous pop group, yesterday after an absence of almost 40 years.
The Beatles Story Museum fought off stiff competition from Japan and the United States for the collection, loaned by Sutcliffe's younger sister, Pauline.
Sutcliffe, who died of a brain hemorrhage just six months before the Beatles reached the hit parade in 1962, became best friends with John Lennon after meeting him at Liverpool Art School in 1959. Sutcliffe, whose life was the subject of the film "Backbeat," was persuaded by Lennon to sell one of his paintings and buy a guitar.
His figurative and abstract paintings accompany striking photographs taken by German photographer Astrid Kirchherr, while the letters give a glimpse of the formative years of the most influential band in the history of pop music. |
