" Sometimes a  girl or boy woud ask him about his sudden changes of mood, why he could be charming one minute and distastful the next. His reply was always the same, if he bothered to reply. Usually when he did he felt no sympathy with his interrogator and would say " I hate you. Why should you like me. charm is only superficial and is easliy exposed as having no concrete value. Underneath the reserve that he piled upon himself at times like this, we knew there beat a human heart. A heart as kind and gentle as could be. He really hated hurting people and hated himself for doing so. He regarded people as conniving scoundrels, endeavouring to have a private view of his behaviour."
