Book Title: Ready Made
© 2000 by Fern Gordon
Silence reigns
No babies are a 'sleeping.
Silence reigns.
No one comes to call.
Space echoes dully of nothing.
Wonders cease.
No calls to fame. No lights beckoning.
Just time -- hanging in air
Measuring out decay and doom.
All the trying...All the dreams...
Come true, or not, are dead.
Pictures on a wall
Voices in your ears with no sound.
Just ... random pulses
Glimpses of times gone --
Movies, home movies, old movies,
Fading...
Moving farther and farther away.
Here's to femininity! Here's to caring and sharing!
And baring and bearing!
Care about someone! Go ahead.
Open yourself to slights,
And, carelessness.
That's the least of it.
Smile and cater and soothe and mother.
You'll find yourself black and blue.
A worn out shoe.
Someone else's trash!
Slowly you look around and there you be.
In another set, another category.
The yearbook published every year
Always has cheerleaders,
Always has a clown,
Always has a varsity.
Every year a new set. Or perhaps
The same set with new pawns.
Set out to guard the queen.
To challenge, and then, too, to depose.
Change!
Come!
Go!
Rise!
Fall!
Too bad mine's almost gone.
Too fast it's past!
Being perfect gives me a pain.
Trying to be perfect gives me a pain...
A real pain.
The clothes quickly piling up on the bed.
Is this appropriate? Should I change again?
This blouse looks .. well ... not okay --
Change again -- such delay!
Caused by trying to be perfect.
Well, I'm here or finally there,
Wherever I am.
What to say ... to be perfectly charming?
To whom ... to be perfectly correct?
Where to sit ... to be perfectly seated?
Really hard to enjoy being perfect...
What a strain!
Finally, I'm perfectly happy.
You see I'm here not there,
Sitting in a perfectly wonderful chair,
All alone ... with myself.
Pleasing no one but feeling perfectly pleased.
Doing whatever it is that I do! Perfectly.
