THE CUP by: Melissa Taylor Matthew 26:27 "Then he took the cup, gave thanks, offered it to them saying 'Drink from it all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." I cannot imagine what the disciples thought was going to take place when Jesus lifted the cup of the new covenant in the air giving thanks to the Father. The impending atonement of sins was only a few days away and these very men were going to run away, deny who he was, and even betray him. When he gave thanks, did they know that later on in the evening Jesus would be face down in the ground sweating blood praying, "If this cup shall pass from me!!"? Even more striking is the moment Jesus reached out the cup to the lips of each disciple and said, "Drink". Traditionally, during this time when a man would choose a wife he would go with his own father and they would sit and dine with the father of the desired women. At some point in the meal the man would approach his hopeful bride with a cup of wine and she would kneel at his feet. He would then offer her a drink and if she drank of the cup it was a symbol of her saying, "yes, I want to be your bride". As Jesus offered the cup to his followers that Passover night he was saying to them. "I want to give my life for you, I want you to be my spiritual bride". I cannot think of a more beautiful love offering we can give our Lord, than to bow before him and accept his cup of life and drink of the new wine that he has to offer. The sting and pain of rejection can leave our hearts calloused and hard to the thought of such a love, but the words are real and the offer is eternal. " If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink" For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom His whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. -Ephesians 3:14-19 NIV Longing to find spiritual guidance?
