Lets face it. The iPod battery does not have a very long life, and when it is totally shot, you need to switch iPods. Since you don't want to have to lose your files, read this guide, and you will have copies of everything. You won't have to worry when the time comes when you need to switch iPods or have to have yours sent in to be repaired!
There are two ways that I know of to do this. Way 1 does not always work, but way 2 will ALWAYS work unless your computer has problems.
First off, make sure your iPod is charged. It doesen't have to be fully charged, even half or 1/3 of a charge is ok. As long as its not just barely charged,it will work. If your iPod isn't charged enough, your computer won't read your iPod,so charge it. Also, make sure that you have the iPod software installed on your computer, and to prevent any problems, make sure your iPod is updated with the latest firmware version.
way 1:
Like I said, this way is VERY tedious,so if copypod didn't work, try realplayer. Now,you are probably wondering why I lead to a music player to back up your files. Realplayer has an option that lets you copy your portable device music to your my music folder.
Once realplayer is downloaded,go to burn/transfer. Look for your ipod in the drop down menu, and click on it.
Once you've done that,go to edit>>select all. Now,while all your music is still selected, and your iPod is still plugged into the computer, right click and select add to now playing. After this, select all your songs again, but this time, make sure its selected inside the now playing list. Now,right click and select add to library. If you did everything right,it should ask you if you want to copy the song files to my music. Click yes, then go to my music and see if it worked. Then, unplug your ipod, then go to my music. Try to play a few of the songs. If they won't play,or a pop-up says the file cannot be found, then you need to try the 2nd way,as this method does not always work. If this way did NOT work for you, uninstall realplayer,as it has spyware in it. If you dont have a spyware removing program to get of the realplayer software, click here to download one.
way 2:
Make sure your iPod is plugged in,then go to start>>search>>for files or folders. While the iPod is still plugged in,search the entire computer for a folder called Ipod_control. Make sure to include hidden folders in the search,as this is a hidden folder.
If all goes right, you should find the folder. After that, make sure you take off the hidden attribute of Ipod_control,because you won't be able to see any files or folders if you don't. To do this,go to view>>customize this folder. Under the general tab, make sure hidden is NOT checked. If it is,uncheck it and click apply, then ok.
After this, double click on a folder called music. These subfolders should contain all of your music,so you should have copies of everything. Now for the ugly part. Start copying EVERYTHING in these folders to my music,or any other folder you want them to be in. Depending on how many files you have on your iPod,this can take up to an hour or more, but only if you dont want all the Ipod_control subfolders in my music. If you don't mind all the subfolders in your computers my music folder, however, simply select all the folders, then copy & paste them into the my music folder, and you should be done in a few minutes. After you are done, you should back these files up onto a CD,flash drive,or something like that in case if your computer crashes,if you switch iPods,or you are getting your iPod repaired. Do NOT assume your music files are safe during repair! The person fixing your iPod may need to format it!
